Aishe decided he couldn’t stand outside his own door all day and night and began walking in the direction he was most familiar with, toward Dante’s Coffee House. Maybe Jacob will be working tonight, that would be nice at least. He picked up a little speed. He did have somewhere to go after all, Dante’s was practically his home away from home. He could find his way there in a snowstorm without his cane if he needed too. And since it was getting colder, a nice hot cup of tea would hit the spot right about now.
Aishe rounded a corner and there it was, squatting between two much larger buildings, the only coffee shop around that stayed open 24 hours. It was said to cater to vampires, and that a vampire actually owned it. Aishe didn’t know for sure, he’d never met the owner, but he was pretty sure there was at least one non-human who worked there.
Dante’s was bright and colorful this evening so Aishe decided it must be busy. Of course he couldn’t actually see the building, but like any place where lots of people congregated, it built up an aura of its own, almost like a living being. And Aisheka could see auras the way most people…well, could see. As he entered through the door it was too loud for him to immediately pick out any one familiar voice, and instead of getting in the long line, Aishe headed toward the section full of tables, chairs and other comfortable seating.
“Here you go hun, this table is empty” the woman was trying to be helpful, and Aisheka was not one to get defensive over his lack of sight. Besides, today he was happy to take advantage of his blindness. He thanked her and sat down with an exhausted sigh. He felt better already. Here in the crowd of the coffee shop, he felt less alone and frightened. It wasn’t really fair to call him frightened either, but it was a little scary. Not the ghost itself (or spirit, shade or whatever it was), but the fact that it could completely rearrange the occult shop and his living space behind it without him knowing. And for the first time since losing his sight, he felt a little handicapped.
Someone had moved into his personal space and was actually sitting down at his table. Aishe heard the unmistakable sound of a ceramic cup being pushed across the table toward him, the pleasant aroma of jasmine and green tea rising up from the cup.
“Hey, you really look like you could use this” a familiar voice told him.
“Jacob! I was wondering if you were here today!”
“Heh. I’m always here. I swear, without me, this place would so fail.”
“Ha ha! It would! No contest.” Aishe sipped his tea and sighed, “It’s so good to hear your voice Jacob. How are you doing?”
“I can’t complain. I’m good…but I feel like I should be worried about you. You looked so…frazzled when you came in. Is everything alright?”
Aishe tilted his head down in order to hide the expression on his face. He didn’t want to worry his friend, but he couldn’t seem to outright lie either.
“Hey, Aishe, really…is there something wrong? Is it that ghost? Did it hurt you?”
There was a reason why Aishe considered a boy who worked in a coffee shop to be his friend. The concern in Jacobs voice was just what he needed to hear.
“Not yet, but…I’m starting to get nervous Jake. It’s throwing things around now.…”
“Man, that’s just not safe! You need to get rid of it!”
“I can’t! I’m not a medium and I don’t know how. This is the first time in all my life I’ve had to deal with ghosts! I…I don’t know what to do.”
“Well, we’ve got to figure something out. You could get seriously hurt.”
