Crossing the Line

Greetings again, brethren. I hope that winter's end holds much goodness for all, as it draws closer. In the name of Clapton, Santana, and Bo Diddley, I offer another sermon.

I've spoken before, many times in fact, of the need for help and love in the world today. Unfortunately, at the same time, the evils that plague us and misguide our efforts are at the core of the reason we have such dire need for goodness in our time. I will now refer to the songstress known to us as Bjork, from the title Where is the Line?

[ahem]

Where is the line with you?
Where is the line with you?
Where is the line with you?
Where is the line with you?

My purse wide open,
you ask again.
I see you trying to
cash into accounts
everywhere.

Where is the line with you?
Where is the line with you?
Where is the line with you?
Where is the line with you?

I want to be flexible,
I want
to go out
of my way for you,
but enough is enough.

Where is the line with you?
Where is the line with you?
Where is the line with you?
Where is the line with you?

I am elastic,
I want to go out of my way for you,
I want to help you.

Where is the line with you?
Where is the line with you?
Where is the line with you?
Where is the line with you?

I want to have capacity for you,
and be elastic, elastic, to be elastic for you
Where is the line with you ?

I'm elastic for you,
BUT ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Where is the line with you?
Where is the line with you?
Where is the line with you?
Where is the line with you?

It's true, some are more charitable than others, but I believe there will always be times when a person's paternal or maternal instincts pull through, and we feel much inclined to help and protect and love those around us. While it is all well and good to help your neighbor, you must yet remember that to help another carry the burden is one thing, but to allow them to lay it all upon you, is quite different. Ultimately, it helps no one if you try or insist upon doing everything for others, for those who have everything done for them become accustomed to such aid, and forget how to cope with even the simplest of setbacks. And indeed, there are those with cold or cruel hearts who know not how to give back, or who don't want to. Do not allow your kindness and decency to make a victim of you. Learn and know when to say enough is enough.

Now, I am not saying that it is wrong to help others, or that one must hold back some in terms of how much charity is distributed. Rather, I insist only that you bear in mind that, while it is admirable to want to care for others, you must also remember to take care of your own. To lay down everything for the sake of another is admirable, but not advisable. Don't forget to value your own life as much as those all around you.

Go in peace, then, and know where the line is to be drawn.
