it’s an honour

“I said East Capitol Street South East, not North East, Mr. Palmer. That would have been the other direction three corners ago.”, Ducky reprimanded his assistant. “I, um, I’m sorry Doctor Mallard, I will… I will turn around over there and drive into the other direction again.” “I will hope so, Mr. Palmer.”, the elderly man replied pointedly, making Jimmy shift uncomfortably in his seat. He always took the wrong way, however it was mostly Ducky who directed him to take it. Only he wouldn’t accept his failure and instead blame Jimmy for their detours.
Sometimes Jimmy Palmer didn’t understand his mentor. He was such a considerate, nice and amiable man, a gentleman that was good to the heart, still when it came to driving and finding their scenes he became a little… well, probably easily irritable. Sometimes he wondered whether that was due to the fact he had been assigned to drive the truck and not let Ducky do so. In fact, now that he thought about it, the doctor always seemed to get a little huffy when someone, mostly Jimmy himself, anticipated him. He couldn’t stand other people being quicker than him or outdoing him, though of course that was never Jimmy’s intention. At times the assistant just couldn’t hold back and burst out with what he thought, even if he hadn’t been asked, and Ducky’s comments to that were rather pointed most of the time. Jimmy would always apologize hastily, of course, though he caught himself doing it again and again and he didn’t know why. Maybe he was just ripe to be a doctor, a senior medical examiner himself? Maybe he was ripe enough to not only be the assistant any more?
And suddenly it dawned on him. Doctor Mallard was afraid he could lose his job, his position, his rank to the younger examiner. He was afraid he would some day be kicked out because he was too slow, too talkative, too old, too oblivious and his ‘greenhorn assistant’ would take over his position. He was afraid the slightest mistake could cost him his beloved job.

“Mr. Palmer!”, Ducky sighed angrily, “You missed the right street again! Concentrate a little more, please. I don’t feel the urge to be the one ending up in autopsy on the table tonight, if you understand.” “Yes, Sir, I’m sorry… I was just thinking…”, Jimmy apologized, then added: “I really like being your assistant, Doctor Mallard. It’s an honour for me.”
