Velvet Revolver yesterday @ the HMH kicked ass. What a show. They've grown a lot since I first saw them on Fields of Rock a few years back.
Sadly this night I couldn't get my camera in so no shots.
Support
Sons of Albyan (I believe this is how you write it) were the supportact and well they were okay. From the british shores, retro rock. Main key in every song was the guitarriff, kinda like the one in AC/DC's riffraff (just listen to that song and you get the picture) only two octaves higher which basically made all the songs sound the same to me. So apart fromthe powerballad (which was the song before the last song) it was pretty boring really. But they did manage to get the audience hyped and exicited...I just lit up another cigarette
The Wait
As I I'm used too long waiting before Slash and co enter the stage, the crowd around me was getting restless. Hey they took they're time back with Slash's Snakepit. They really took they're time with Guns...It's the "we're from hollywood" thang, you know.
I didn't really mind waiting while the stage was all ready to go. They soundsystemblasted out great songs. Some AC/DC, a little Mötorhead and a lot of old KISS songs, some more unknown. So no I was made for loving you (Thank god) but great songs like C'mon and Love her, Anything for my Baby, Mr. Speed and the bit betterknown classics Hardluck Woman and Let me Go, Rock n' Roll.
Great way to get amped up for the show...until the show really started that is...
From Hollywood...VELVET REVOLVER
As good as the music was while waiting for some reason while the band slowly entered the stage they had to play some rapsong before anouncing the band and seeing them rip into Let it Roll. Tearing through both albums Contraband and Libertad one of the biggest suprises was when Duff Mckagan (bass) grabbed an acoustic guitar and sat down and started strumming soon joined by Slash who was playing a doubleneck guitar of which the top half was acoustic and the bottomhalf electric.
Holy crap they were playing the Guns classic Patience and it sounded amazing and so familiar.
Actually the whole show breathed the air of Hollywood sleaze and old Guns N' Roses...speaking of which the guns classics It's so easy and Mr. Brownstone got the crowd in a frenzy.
Most of the gig the crowd was one big pit, during these songs it became an even bigger pit.
One of the greatest moments was standing in front of Slash as he ripped into a guitarsolo as a musical intermezzo while the rest of the band was quiet. Just like in Guns. It's still great to see that tophat noodle and doodle away on his sixstring.
A second musical intermezzo came when they started the encore and Matt Sorum ripped into a drumsolo.
Ending the show with they're first single Slither a great night of old scholl rock n' roll ended.
Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots fame might still not be the best singer for the job and I do think too many people/fans see Velvet Revolver as the new Guns N' Roses and expect a similar voice, I thought he sounded great and he gave his own twist to things.
Although rumor has it that he has left the band. I dunno, nothing confirmed on the website yet. Might be a late april fools joke.
Either way...I had a blast! Next stop; Hardcore Superstar
