Personality:

Meet Kanaya Maryam, the most fashionable troll in Alternia, with a penchant for interior decorating, landscaping and a not-so-secret passion for romantic tales of rainbow drinkers, the troll equivalent of vampires.

Kanaya is, in many ways, different from her peers. Compared to most of her fellow trolls, she isn't particularly violent: she is mostly friendly, very patient and helpful, and doesn't care about blood status, unlike trolls such as Equius or Eridan. Her online handle grimAuxiliatrix portrays both sides of her personality well: Kanaya is an auxiliatrix-- meaning "a helpful woman" in Latin-- and someone who cares deeply about her friends, often to the point of meddling perhaps a bit too much. More than one troll has pointed that fact out, and Vriska even called her a "lousy st8pid godd8mn supportive fri8nd!" In addition to that, Kanaya is also the troll to go to for Auspisticing: she often mediates interactions between trolls, making their relationship-- of any quadrant-- as functional as possible. In fact, Eridan has even said that Kanaya is "the vvillage twwo wwheel devvice wwhen it comes to auspisticing", making Kanaya's role as a meddling mediator even more obvious than what it already was.

Another difference between Kanaya and her fellow trolls is her ability to withstand the Alternian sun, even going as far as enjoying basking in its sunlight. She is very creative and obviously interested in both fashion and interior decorating / landscaping, as we can see by her various changes of outfits, the colorful (and stylish!) way she decorates her room, and the way she shaped the trees surrounding her hive using her lipstick/chainsaw. Lastly, she is also rather reluctant to troll the humans, namedly Rose, preferring instead to converse normally with them.

But Kanaya isn't only about the sunshine and rainbows. Like her online handle suggests, she also has a grim side: she won't hesitate to use violence and/or less orthodox methods if she has to. After all, this is the troll girl who cut her lusus' body to retrieve the matriorb (which would guarantee the survival of the troll race), and who chainsawed Tavros' paralyzed legs without hesitation, so he could get a functioning robotic pair from Equius. It should be noted that her intentions weren't purely altruistic, however: given her flushed (romantic) feelings for Vriska, who she had watched kiss Tavros, it is entirely possible that Kanaya felt somewhat vindicated as she cut his legs off, even if it was for his own good.

It is unclear as to whether her rainbow drinker transformation changed her personality in any way. While she has shown more aggressiveness and violence after the transformation took place, this is mostly due to the fact that she wanted revenge, pure and simple: Eridan had destroyed the matriorb-- thus condemning the troll race to extinction-- killed both herself and Feferi, and KO'd Sollux: Kanaya had to make him pay in the most gruesome way possible. But even though she killed Eridan, she was nowhere as drastic with the other trolls that she encountered: she punched Vriska in the face and kicked Gamzee in the bone bulge so hard that he literally flew out of his shoes and off of the lab floor, falling into the abyss close-by. Beyond these three particular trolls, rainbow drinker Kanaya was as considerate as her past troll self: after her reawakening, she drank Terezi's blood but didn't kill her, and even bandaged the puncture wounds after she was done, indicating that she obviously still cared about her friends.

Canon Background:

To put it quite shortly, Homestuck is a webcomic in which four teenage kids play a computer game that eventually leads to the end of the world. Looks simple, right? It's actually quite far from simple as it can ever get. Between multiverse timetravel shenanigans, paradox clones and plot twists that sneak up on you like the deadliest ninja ever, there's a lot that can be said about this canon.

But we'll just stick to Kanaya Maryam, for obvious reasons.

When we first meet her, she is in her room, stylishly decorated by herself and illuminated by the Alternian sun. Her hive is located at the Land of Rays and Frogs, in an oasis in a desert, beside a volcano and a frog temple. Kanaya is one of the very few trolls with jade green blood, which allowed her to be selected and raised by a Virgin Mother Grub, who became her lusus; this is a very rare event, so rare that there are barely any registers of it throughout troll history. In return for her lusus' protection from the creatures lurking in the desert, Kanaya would one day provide her with progeny, by removing the matriorb from her lusus' dead body and using it to hatch a new Mother Grub: the creature who gives birth to all trolls, using a mixture of the genetic material provided by adult trolls. Shortly after we meet Kanaya, her lusus dies from what she believes to be the consequence of playing Sgrub. She then retrieves the matriorb from the corpse of her lusus and captchalogues it, with the intent of hatching it when the right time comes.

When Kanaya returns to her room once more, it is revealed to us that she has found Rose Lalonde's walkthrough for the game they are about to play; she has ended up idolizing Rose and daydreaming about her and her friends' adventures. But there's no more time to waste, because Kanaya needs to connect to Sgrub and become Vriska's server player... a decision she quickly regrets and backtracks from, after watching Vriska-- her unrequited love interest, to put it simply-- kissing Tavros. After that heartbreak, she becomes Equius' server player, instead.

What happens next is the chain of events that is part of playing Sgrub: killing evil creatures and powering-up, hopping around from portal to portal, until the game's goal can finally be achieved and they can reach their reward... but just as the trolls are about to enter the new universe they've created through Sgrub, they are stopped by a rift in space-time continuum called a scratch, brought on by a demon called Jack Noir. To prevent any possible deaths, Aradiabot transportalizes the trolls into an asteroid in the Veil, where they get in contact with the kids, trying to help them with their own session.

Kanaya is particularly interested in Rose, who she admires both for her fashion sense and intelligence, and even begins to pick up a few sarcastic habits from the other girl-- something that she had been completely unfamiliar with, prior to talking with the human kids. She worries about Rose and often tries to talk her out of her plans, which appear to become more and more dangerous as the time passes, and decides to talk to Jade after Rose's video transmission blacks out. Later, realizing that she could hatch the matriorb inside the meteor, Kanaya ceases pestering Jade so she can retreat and finally fulfil her part of the deal with her deceased lusus.

But things don't go according to plan. While Terezi absconds to somewhere else in the meteor, Eridan appears and KO's Sollux, kills Feferi, destroys the matriorb and kills Kanaya with a powerful blast of energy through her abdomen, fleeing the scene right after and leaving Karkat to deal with the mess. Karkat tries to revive Kanaya without any results, and he eventually flees the scene with the unconscious Sollux.

This is not the end for Kanaya, however, and she soon comes back to life as a Rainbow Drinker, the troll equivalent of a vampire. It's not clear how much time it takes for the transformation to occur, but when Terezi returns to the computer lab, Kanaya's body is gone and Feferi's corpse sports two puncture wounds, surrounded by jade green blood; later, when Terezi is trolling Sollux, Kanaya approaches her and presumably knocks Terezi unconscious so she can drink her blood. But even though she's now a Rainbow Drinker, Kanaya is careful not to drink too much, and even bandages Terezi's wounds after she is done.

Wrapping Eridan's cape around the wound on her abdomen, her skin glowing brightly, Kanaya makes her way through the meteor to find the sea dweller in question; sure enough, she finds him, as well as Gamzee and Vriska. Wasting no more time, she kicks Gamzee so hard in the bone bulge that he flies out of his shoes and on to the abyss nearby, punches Vriska in the face, and finally turns to Eridan to make him pay: she snaps his wand in half and does the same to his body, bisecting him with her chainsaw. As she finishes the job, Equius' shades-- which had been thrown into the air after she'd kicked Gamzee, who had been wearing them-- fall neatly on her face, and she then proceeds to apply the lipstick to her lips, smearing Eridan's blood all over them... which she ends up licking. Upon seeing this brutal and gruesome display, Vriska starts waxing red for Kanaya.

The last image we see of Kanaya in this timeline-- not counting the dream bubbles-- is of her watching Rose via Trollian, using Equius' glasses.

Background (AU!Canon; HP):

Kanaya was the first and only child of Mercurius Maryam and Ceres Maryam, a wealthy pureblood family from Romania. She doesn't remember her parents, however, because tragedy struck the Maryam household when Kanaya was only a one year old baby: her parents were killed by a clan of vampires who spared no one, not even servants or other family members, except for one curious, wide-eyed baby: Kanaya Maryam. Upon discovering the toddler and finding herself unable to kill her, one of the vampires-- a woman by the name of Grammia Virgo, one of the less violent vampires of their group-- decided to save the baby instead, despite the angry and violent protests of her peers, and the eventual ban from their clan.

Never having been a mother before she was turned into a vampire, Grammia decided to take matters into her own hands and raise Kanaya as her own, taking all the necessary precautions to dampen her vampire instincts and thirst. Her arduous efforts paid off, because the toddler grew up into a happy, normal child, entirely convinced that her family had died in a fire of magical origin, and that her guardian was a witch just like any other.

When Kanaya turned 6, they moved to a country house just outside of Winchester, England, which had belonged to Kanaya's parents; Grammia thought it would be best to get away from their origins, so Kanaya could blossom and explore her potential to the fullest. It was there that Kanaya's acute taste for fashion and decorating/landscaping began, and, ironically, it was also there that she discovered most muggle culture... particularly vampire romance novels. The ones she read were almost exclusively muggle: there was something fascinating about the way non-magical folk portrayed those creatures, as well as the romance that was always present in every story. Secretly, she fantasized about being swept away by a dashing vampire, even though she was well aware of the near impossibility of such a thing, and how dangerous it could be. Sometimes, she even imagined she was a vampire herself, living a life full of adventure and danger.

Eventually, her Hogwarts letter arrived, just like Grammia knew it would. Kanaya's happiness at starting classes was only overcome by her happiness at making friends from all houses and all origins, not caring one bit about blood status or Gringott's bank accounts.

But on the summer she turned 13, her life took a 180 degree turn: Kanaya was viciously attacked by a pureblood wizard who mistook her for a muggle girl, as she returned home after buying one of her many muggle books. Contrary to the usual modus operandi used in so many anti-muggle attacks, the wizard didn't cast Avada Kedavra: instead, he used a cutting spell that was even more powerful than Sectumsempra, piercing through her abdomen and leaving Kanaya to die a slow and painful death. Thankfully, her guardian arrived right on time-- she rescued her and brought her home, before taking one of the hardest decisions in her undead life, ever since she decided to take care of Kanaya as her own: she turned the girl into a vampire, instead of letting her die.

It was a shock, when Kanaya regained consciousness, not only because of her sudden new condition-- the thirst was overwhelming-- but also because she finally learned the truth about the death of her family, and who Grammia Virgo really was. Kanaya could not believe that she had actually become one of the creatures she had daydreamed so many times about: it was both exciting and absolutely terrifying-- and what if she lost control and bit one of her friends? What if she was expelled from Hogwarts?

As always, her guardian supported her through the hardships of being a newly transformed vampire and taught Kanaya all she needed to know, from the potions she had to drink in order to keep her thirst in check, to all the little things she had to be careful about when dealing with normal wizards and witches, or other magical creatures-- specially centaurs. It wasn't an easy task to follow through with, but Kanaya spent every waking hour of what was left of her summer vacations in researching and practicing potions, and also studying charms and other incantations that would help control her new instincts and protect those surrounding her. After what felt like only a couple of days, when in reality had been almost two months, she returned to Hogwarts, fearful but ready to enter a new phase of her life.

At Hogwarts, Kanaya is particularly skilled at Herbology and Potions, the latter due to her need for a regular supply of potions to keep her vampire self in check, as well as the beauty potions she uses to look more alive and less like the reanimated corpse she really is.
