The Day The Earth Stood Still is one of my all time favorite movies!
It was well ahead of it's time, and is an allegory for the life and death of Jesus, and is an anti - war message.
I have not had the experiences that you've had in being in a war zone, but, if you've read the comments section to my most recent LJ entry, you know that I had to cope with a great deal of violence in my own life from an early age.
It has left me with a very pessimistic view of humanity.
I would tell these aliens that humans are a backwards, violent, narccissistic species, and that that Homo Sapiens are a dead end species, bent on it's own destruction due to not being able to overcome it's more primitive instincts towards each other.
I, too, feel that it's too late for even an Alien Intervention to help. Remember how Klaatu was hunted down and killed, after he'd done no harm to anyone? That's what might happen to any poor alien who wanted to help us - look at Jesus; whether you believe in him or not, here is the story of a man who just wanted to help - and was tortured and killed for his efforts.
Any possible Alien Intervention would have to come with at least a few ships, and they ought to be heavily armed, too, to protect these other - world beings from our governemnt and our military.
Starman, starring Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen is another excellent example of an alien visitation.
Jeff Bridges' character is just checking us out because he intercepted the Voyager probe and had listened to the gold anodized record with it's invitation to any intelligent life out in space to come and meet us.
His ship is badly damaged and he is hunted down, just like Klaatu. Terrific movie!
A book you might like is Robert Heinlein's " Have Space Suit, Will Travel." It's from his young adult series. Kip, the 18 year old hero, wins a space suit in a contest.. a chance encounter with aliens in his own backyard takes him on a perilous and fascinating journey, where he must defend Earth in an alien court of law! It's my very favorite book, and I recommend it highly.
