Purple and Green

On Tuesday evening I had an evening off. Husband was working in Kensington that day, and the building where I work is almost opposite Kensington Olympia which has been hosting and antiques fair this last week. So on Tuesday Husband met me from work and we went to the antiques fair - husband reminding me not to buy anything, because I couldn't afford. Too right! The things that did have price tags were well out of my price range, so Heaven only knows what the things without price tags were going for.

A lot of the things there were not really to my taste. Husband wanted to see the paperweights exhibition, and was then rather disappointed by what was on offer. Some of the bric-a-brac was quite nice, but I didn't bother to find out the price. However I did see a necklace I rather liked. It was on a counter with rather a lot of heavy, overblown Victorian jewellery, which made this necklace look very simple by contrast. It consisted of a gold chain from which hung a series of pendants, each with a semi-precious stone, purple amethyst alternating with a lovely green stone that was not an emerald. I pointed it out to Husband, at which point the dealer, sensing she might, possibly have some business, came over, saw which necklace I pointing at, and me that that had been the one in the photograph in the Sunday Times. As we don't get the Sunday Times, I just nodded sagely to be polite. She then told me it was a Suffragette necklace. This made sense.

"That explains the colours," I said.
"I didn't know that," said Husband, drawing me away.
"Oh, yes," I said, allowing myself to be drawn away from the counter. "Purple and green were the colours of the Suffragettes."

So I didn't buy myself a new necklace to wear next time I visit the Drazi homeplanet, although David did buy a book on china, to give to a friend for Christmas.

But it has set me wondering yet again: Were green and purple the colours of the Women's Suffrage Movement in the US too? And why did JMS choose green and purple (or purple and green, if you prefer)for the Drazi conflict?
