What bothers me about the story, and what makes me feel it is so sad, is that there was a lot of genuine hope offered through the People's Temple. People who were members, who lost relatives there, including Jim Jones, Jr., still feel that they had the potential to make a better world. It just went so wrong. There were signs along the way that indicated that there was something wrong with Jim Jones, but people ignored them because they were so committed and somewhat brainwashed. I would say you have very good reason not to trust organized religion. I can't imagine what that time must have been like for you, especially as a kid.
My distrust of organized religion comes from my father who is somewhat paranoid. He was raised in Christian Science which he regards as almost a cult. He survived a couple of major illnesses as a child without medical help on what he considers to be his shear will to live. This was during the Hitler years and World War II. He is anti any group. He doesn't trust religion or any government. I've dabbled in various disciplines over the years because I've wanted to know for myself what I do or do not trust or believe in. It's difficult to have 'faith' without a structure, outside of a group. I lean toward disciplines where you meditate, like the Eastern faiths or wicca practiced alone. 'Faith' is important, but I don't know how to trust it.
