Global Warming Lies - Part 1 - The Hybrid Car

Jan 21, 2007 19:58

I find it rather upsetting that people believe so many lies and half truths regarding global warming. Don't get me wrong. Global warming is real, and humans are the cause.

So what are these lies exactly? Well, for the most part, they are all a part of one the idea that we can buy our way out of global warming.

Mythical Ways of Reducing Global Warming

1. Buy a Hybrid car - Well, lets think about this. How much energy does it take to get rid of your current ride in a environmentally safe manner? How much energy to build that fancy shiny new hybrid car? And how much money are you going to have to put into circulation to get this fabulous exchange to take place? After looking closely over this very question, I found that unless the new vehicle was getting something like four or five times better gas mileage, then it is in fact not better for the environment.

Okay, so at this point, we need to take a step back and consider that earlier question... How much money is that putting back into the circulation?

I always find this bit rather tricky to explain. Here's the short and to the point of it...

Using money causes global warming.

Think about it. What causes global warming? Mostly carbon dioxide, right? And where does this carbon dioxide come from? From the burning of stuff... all sorts of organic stuff... living stuff like trees, and grasses, and bushes, and so forth... But also from non-living stuff like coal, oil, and natural gas. And why does most of this burning happen? For the energy that the burning releases.

Money is basically the ability to cause someone to do something... to cause someone to make something, or building something, or provide some service, or food or something. Money causes people to do things, which requires energy. The more money there is, the more energy that needs to be used...

So, when you are paying money for something, paying a bill, whatever, you are requesting someone (or group of people) to do something, and to use energy and other material resources... which of course, causes global warming. Of course, they may have already provided what you wanted, so they are doing something and expending energy on the expectation that you will demand it at a later time.

Now take the money and purchases that you will make on a daily, monthly, yearly, and lifetime basis, and then think about how many other people are out there that have similar purchasing habits... And the sum of that is the global warming that we have caused as humanity.

1. Buy a hybrid car. So, is that really the best choice? How much energy is going to be use? How much energy will it take to get rid of that old car? It that car really that old anyway? Is it really in that bad of shape? Is it worth paying the premium for a brand new hybrid car that only gets twice the gas mileage of your current car?
