Today on my way to a property inspection, I broke out my CDs of "Sweeney Todd." Recently I watched and enjoyed a concert version of this incredible Sondheim masterpiece on PBS. It featured Patti LuPone as Mrs. Lovett and George Hearn as Todd. I had seen Hearn perform this role on Broadway, and was even more touched and effected by the depth of his ability to convey vivid emotion through the most refined vocal nuances.
Anyway, I broke out the CDs and started listening to them. Before the surgery on my vocal chords, which was performed in January, 2001, I had not been able to sing a note in maybe 5, maybe 7 years. Today I found myself singing along, not loudly but tunefully with the cast recording.
In the middle of my range - I've always been more of a tenor than an alto - my voice was so strong and so well supported that I was astonishing myself. It really sounded good and my range was about an octave; although I definitely lose power at the bottom and top of my register. Still!!!!!
Another reason to rejoice.
