Nasi Padang

I always enjoy a good meal of nasi padang. Beef rendang, vegetable curry, sambal sotong, chicken curry, served with fragrant rice makes a mouth water. My favourite place to go to for a good fix is the stall along Zion Road, at River Valley.

Since I don’t work in the area, I have to find alternatives for a good nasi padang (and it’s variants) fix near where I am. One thing my colleagues and I discovered recently is ayam penyet, which is smashed fried chicken. The nasi padang stall at the Food Junction at Bugis Junction serves a mean ayam penyet. The chicken is juicy and is topped with fried shredded ginger. Serve that with their special sambal (chilli sauce), one will definitely have their nasi padang cravings satisfied.

THAT IS IF ONE DOESN’T LOOK AT THE PRICES AND ENTIRELY DISCOUNTS THEIR SERVICE.

I was there for lunch last week and decided to have nasi padang instead of the ayam penyet set. For a dish of plain rice, curry vegetable, a fried egg and a fried chicken thigh, my bill came up to an astronomical $6.20. The chicken thigh costs a whopping $3.50, which is about the price of a bowl of noodles or a plate of chicken rice.

Never mind that, I asked for the sambal given with the ayam penyet, and the guy went, “No.”

Needless to say, I am boycotting that place because it’s cutthroat and definitely not one of the best places around for nasi padang. I’d rather spend my money at the stall at River Valley Road anytime, and anyone knows I’d spend on good food.
