Well! I was initially unimpressed because my mental image of Shinji was a severely emaciated homeless guy with a death wish who only belonged in an Aki and Mitsu sandwich. But a good boyfriend? Hell no. He'd be the guy who would sleep with you and make you think you're all special because he reluctantly opens up, get all mad and storm off over something trivial because he's self-destructive like that, and then come crawling back a week later with an apology so vague it might as well be an IOU.
So this whole, "omg I love yooooouuuuu!" thing between him and Minako in the S. Link just... did nothing for me.
But the pic in your profile where's all, "shut UP," with his hat and she's all surprised and he's frowning all prettily? That I can get behind. It seems more realistic to me that Shinji would be the type who would call out annoyances, rather than lovingly forgive them. It's be a, "you annoy the fuck out of me... why am I still here? ... oh, yeah," kind of thing.
...plus, he looks so much like a pissed off Senpai. XD

I'll admit, 100% right off the bat that I've spent more time looking at pretty pictures than actually reading translations. Some of what I have read, I've thought, "I can work with that! I can dig it!" some of it... not so much. I love the juxtaposition. She's so... cute. And little. And almost all the fanart/official art has her looking so damned chipper. And he's got a permanent stick up his ass and hides anything that makes him look like a well-adjusted person with normal hobbies. So immediately, I'm thinking... This is awesome. They're almost polar opposites. It's adorable.
"I looooooove you~" secret perfect boyfrand, I can do without, though. I'd like to think that her SUPER DUPER CUTE MINDRAY POWERS don't... exactly work on him, but she's still able to get him to talk to her a little. She seems persistent enough that when she puts her mind to it, you can't turn her away even if you pull your hat over her eyes and run away. And Shinji, well... he's always struck me as a good guy who doesn't know how to be anything other than an irritable asshole and I don't think that would change even in a relationship. He'd get annoyed with all that sunshine, call her on her shit, fix her up some dinner, and then pretend that he wasn't being nice, all "Shut up and eat, already." Then they'd take Koro-chan for a walk.
I need to not be talking so much about "choose-your-own-personality" main characters from games in a language I can't understand. xD

I also love the idea of Minako's "Minato-ness" not working on Shinji. She can flit her eyelashes and be a pimp and solve everyone's problems, but Shinji can be the one she'd like to come home to because he's really tall willing to put as much into the relationship as she is. (I always got the impression that for Minato's romantic S. Links, it was Minato who did all the work, and the other person just talked and was encouraged. The only time it was actually about Minato as it was the other person was Aigis... whichiswhyIshipthem, among other reasons. DON'T JUDGE ME.)
They'd be cute in battle together. He'd wield in axe that weighs more than he does and when he gets knocked over by a maya shadow or something, Minako can be all fierce and shout, "get away from my boyfriend!" and beat the shit out of the thing. And then he'd bake her cookies.
