Arthur opened his eyes, not understanding. Was this Avalon? If so, why was there a dragon sat six feet away from him. He rubbed his eyes and looked again, the dragon was still there and he was sure it was weeping. He followed it's gaze and looked upon the battered body of his best friend.
"Merlin!" He cried, running towards him. He shook him, tried to rouse him, called his name over and over until the dragon spoke.
"It's no use, he will not wake".
"YOU did this!" Arthur spat venomously, picking up the sword walking toward the dragon, "and now you will pay". He swung the sword high in the air, ready to strike. The dragon did not move. He just continued to weep.
"He died for you". Arthur froze, sword mid arc. "He sacrified himself so you could live and build your glorious Albion".
"H...How...?" Arthur stuttered. "Why?"
"He believed your destiny was greater than his and used his magic to swap your places. For every life given, a life must be taken, to keep the balance".
"Bring him back". Arthur sobbed.
"I cannot do that Arthur, he made his choice, all that is left is to be with him when the end comes. It will not be long now".
Arthur ran to his precious friend and lifted him into his arms. He sat there, just holding Merlin, feeling his breathing get slower. His tears flowed like raindrops falling onto the man who meant the world to him, mingling with the tears his beloved Merlin had shed for him. Sobs racked his body, how had he waited this long to tell him, how had not realised his feelings for all these years?
"Please Merlin, don't leave me, I can't do this without you. I need you to share this with. It was our vision. My life is nothing without you. I love you". He whispered, softly kissing Merlin's lips. "Please, I can't say goodbye".
Kilgarrah sighed as he approached them.
"Give me the sword Arthur". He commanded. Arthur looked up in suprise. "A magical life can be exchanged for another. I could not stop him, but I can stop your pain. Put the sword in Merlin's hand and place it on my heart".
"You would do this for me? Why?" Arthur asked.
"Because it is your destiny to rule the Kingdom together. The legends foretold that your destinies are and always will be entwined. I am old, I am dying and I can make my last act a meaningful one. Do as I ask Arthur".
Arthur lifted Merlin and rested his hand on Kilgarrah's heart before putting the sword between them.
"Tell Merlin his destiny was too great for him to be lost so young". Kilgarrah said. "Close your eyes Arthur and do not let him go". The dragon sighed. "Goodbye young Warlock, it has been an honour. Vascronos Mygosa"
A brilliant flash of light surrounded them and Kilgarrah was gone.
