Chapter 2

Hankyung’s POV

I couldn’t believe what happened. One of the apartments in our street caught on fire, I rushed in to save some children, woke up in a hospital, got greeted by a… a… fairy. What are those things anyways? They’re… I don’t know. I don’t believe in those things! I think that they are, well, fiction? The fairy even had a name! She called herself Heechul, said that she controlled fire, and that she came from Incantare which was like the place most souls go to if they are not that fit for Heaven.

I seriously did not want to believe her. So, I asked one of my very Christian friends, Siwon, about it. He ended up calling me crazy and saying that I needed to go to the Church and ask for penance because the devil was coming for me.

I honestly did not know what to say or what to do. I spent my nights looking out of the window, and my days in school looking behind me. I couldn’t even work properly. I work in this bookstore with this café with my friends, Siwon, Eunhyuk, Kyuhyun, Sungmin and Shindong. I work the cash register, Siwon and Eunhyuk work with the books and whatnot, Sungmin and Shindong does the café. Siwon also helps in the café. Kyuhyun, well, he does the papers. His father owns the place, so yeah. Since we’re mostly doing nothing, he’s usually making out with Sungmin at the back. I needed to tell someone about Heechul, but I doubt my friends would understand. Siwon already thought that the devil was coming out for me, I can imagine how the others would react… well, they would probably react the same way as Siwon but to a lesser extent: they’ll call me crazy or psychotic. Especially Kyuhyun. That man has a sharp tongue. I’m sure Sungmin could back me up on that. He always has that tongue down his throat.

I went home late one day. It was Friday, and unlike other University Students who have a wild Friday night, mine was spent on work. I don’t have school on Fridays, so I have wild Thursday nights or Saturday nights. What am I saying, I’m not all that wild. I like going out to drink, but the club is not for me. Yes, I love dancing -I adore it, really- but clubs are not for me. I like looking at all the hotness and whatnot, but I don’t want to have a boner in the club nor do I want to watch people have sex in front of me. I’d do that in the privacy of my room.

So, arriving back home, I threw my bag to the bed and sighed. I went to the computer and turned it on. It was time to write my paper. As the computer turned on, I grabbed my shirt and pulled it off. I sighed and, just when I was about to throw my shirt to the bed, I heard this small voice call out to me. I tensed and looked around. There, sitting on the monitor of the computer with her legs dangling, was Heechul.

I screamed and fell on the floor… and she was grinning! She was freaking grinning at me! What was so funny at my fear? I pointed a finger at her, “What are you doing here?” I also realized that I was half naked so I placed my shirt on my chest.

She laughed. “Why are you hiding?” she asked me in that small… yet, you know, cute voice of hers… and she flew towards me. She sat on my knee and I shivered. I tried moving back, but my bed was already against my back. She told me, “Is there something to be ashamed about the human body?” she asked me. What kind of question was that? Okay, I know that I was a man and we have nothing to be ashamed about our chests, but what if Siwon was right and this… Heechul… was a demon? She crossed her legs and told me, “In my world, everyone is half naked.”

I felt my eye twitch. “You guys are fairies!” I told her. “Of course you’ll be half naked!” Where was this girl from? Oh yeah, from fairy land.

Heechul stood on my knee and started to twirl around. “I like you, Hankyung. I think you’re funny.”

My eye twitched again. I asked her, “You said that all of you are usually innocent because you’re being cleansed and freed from human emotions, right?” she nodded. “So, is this how you were when you were alive? Were you this…. Ditzy?”

“What’s ditzy?”

I was glad that she didn’t know what that meant. She could have burned my face! “I mean, were you like this when you were a human?”

She shook her head. “I doubt it.”

“Why are you even coming to our world if you’re not allowed to? You could get influenced by us and turn human.”

She raised both her arms. “The more I become human, the more I will lose these golden rings around my arms. Since I haven’t lost them yet, I am as fairy as fairy can be!”

Ditzy. That’s what I was going to call her from then on. A ditz. A ditzy ditz of a fairy who was actually rather cute.

“So, Hankyung,” Heechul flew to the computer and stood on the screen. “What is this thing and why is it flashing this blue light? I want to know!”

She was a demanding ditz who I was stuck with. So I stood up and threw my shirt to the bed. I sat down in front of the computer and she sat on my shoulder. Instead of working on my paper, I ended up explaining to her what a computer was, what a TV was, what a cellphone was, and everything else. It was tiring, and when I wanted to shower, she wanted to come in because she wanted to know how humans showered!

For a whole week straight, she visited me every single night. I was not able to go out with my friends or anything, and I had to work on my paper either during work or during school. My friends were asking me what was wrong because I seemed to be pressed for time, but I couldn’t tell him. They’ll call me crazy, and they’ll call me a pervert for thinking that Heechul, a fairy, was cute.

One day, while I was falling asleep on the cashier, Siwon walked up to me, asking, “So, how’s your little fairy?”

I glared at Siwon. “You are not to mention anything about her ever again. I almost lost my life. Of course I’ll be… delusional.”

Siwon laughed and patted my back, telling me that it was okay to have gone a bit crazy. I told him not to call me crazy, and he just patted my back.

When work was over, Eunhyuk came over to me, asking, “Hey, can I borrow your notes for Gender Relations?” We were in that class together. “I wasn’t able to go to class a few days ago.”

“Sure,” I told him and brought him to my family’s apartment first which was just near the bookstore. I totally forgot about Heechul’s nightly visits that when Eunhyuk entered the room, he froze. I placed my hand on his shoulder and asked him, “What’s wrong?” I looked at where he was staring and Heechul was standing on top of the computer monitor. I gulped and thought, fucking shit. How was I going to explain this to Eunhyuk?

Heechul flew to Eunhyuk and waved her hand. “Hi! I’m Heechul, a fairy. I come from Incantare that Hankyung likes to call fairy land. Are you one of Hankyung’s friends?”

Eunhyuk stuttered, “Wh-what the hell?”

I sighed and patted Eunhyuk’s back. “I advise you not to talk to Siwon about this. He’ll just tell you that you need to go get an exorcism.”

Eunhyuk’s face paled. Heechul, apparently, got worried, “Oh, dear, are you cold? Shall I create a fire for you?”

“No!” I raised my hand. “No fires, please. No fire.”

Eunhyuk stuttered again, “Hankyung, I want to faint. Punch me,” he grabbed my shoulders, “punch me right now.”

“I’m not punching you!” I cupped his face and made him look at Heechul. “That fairy is real!”

Eunhyuk didn’t say anything more, so I made him sit on the bed and I made Heechul explain everything. As Heechul explained, I took my notebook. When Heechul finished, I gave Eunhyuk my notebook where he promised to return it tomorrow to me for class. He was pale. He was frightened. And it was funny.

I’m not alone!

Heechul’s POV

When I went home that night, Donghae and Kibum were waiting for me and they seemed mad. It was also night in Incantare, and they said that Kangin has been looking for me.

“I told him that I’ll be back later on,” I pouted. “Besides, it’s not dangerous here! We’re safe in this happy go lucky world!”

Kibum raised an eyebrow and made me sit on a rock in the middle of the lake. “What were you doing Heechul?”

I crossed my arms in front of my chest. It was time for me to confront both her and Donghae, so I asked, “have you always known about this portal in your lake?”

Kibum and Donghae shook his head, and Kibum answered me, “we only knew when you appeared from a portal. That’s the only portal you can make from Incantare! The portal to Hell does not exist here and the only portal to Heaven is at the castle! Where else could you have gone to?”

From behind Kibum, Donghae grinned. “How did it look like?”

“Donghae!” I got excited, “It’s amazing! I admit that it’s not that clean as here, but it was amazing! They have stuff like television, computers, cellphones! They have a lot more stuff that we don’t have! Like sports and even books!”

Kibum scoffed. “You can’t have books here because it speaks about emotions that we can’t have. Our emotions are limited because we have to get cleansed.”

“Why are you always like this?” I sneered at Kibum. Someone snuck a few books from the human world before. Despite those books being large, that fairy was able to make those books small. Kibum got a hold of those books and she read those books nonstop. The reason why she was always on the edge was because of those books for those books influenced her. Donghae also told me that Kibum has been to the human world. With the influence of those books and of humans, Kibum lost one of the pearls that surrounded her eyes. Since then, she stopped going to the human world and she gave the books to the Fairy King.

“Heechul, going there isn’t right!” Kibum was getting angry at me. I wished she was back to her full fairy self where she was all happy go lucky and… what was the term that Hankyung used? Ditz?

“Kibum,” I flew closer to her and Donghae moved move, scared that something might happen. “Tell me, where was your portal?”

Kibum frowned at me. “I am not telling you where my portal is, but I am telling you that it is different from yours just in case you accuse me of lying!”

I frowned at her also. “I never accused you of anything! I just want you to leave me alone because I like what I am doing! I like going to the human world and you have no right to hold me back! This is my life!” Kibum sneered and Donghae looked scared. I felt… angry. I’ve never felt angry in such a way, and so I flew back to my little cottage that I shared with Kangin.

When I returned, though, Kangin hugged me -more like squeezed me. He was a strong fairy that I had to beg him, “let me go!”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Kangin let go of me and I started coughing. He then cupped my face and examined it. “You have no injuries. That’s good,” and he checked my arms and legs. When he saw that I was free of injuries, he finally relaxed. “You’re well,” he sighed and hugged me, “as long as my sister is alive, I’m happy.”

I sighed. “I’m a fairy. I can’t die,” I pushed him away and walked to my bed. He looked rather hurt that I pushed him away, but I couldn’t care less. I didn’t like how Kibum talked to me. She had no right to scold me or tell me what to do. I liked what I was doing and I planned on doing it until the day I leave Incantare.

When I woke up the next day, I screamed. I covered my mouth and looked for Kangin. Thankfully, and sadly, he wasn’t there. I needed him, but at the same time I didn’t want him to know what happened. I flew back to my bed and grabbed what I saw; one of my golden rings cut into two. It broke. This was the first time it ever happened, and I cried. I counted the rings on my arms. There were a lot of it, thirteen. Seven on one side, six on the other. From fourteen, it was down to thirteen. I doubt anyone would notice -I hoped and prayed that no one would notice. I was scared, and like anger, I have never felt scared before. I was also starting to feel guilty as well. So I hid the ring.

When I flew out of the house, I bumped into Kangin who said that he was just talking to Yesung. Yesung was a close friend of Yesung and Ryeowook. While Yesung was an Earth fairy, Ryeowook was an Air fairy. Yesung’s markers were these intricate designs that start from his head and goes down all the way to his hip. The designs are beautiful as it goes around in curls and dots and… it’s just breathtaking. His wings are small, though, but it went around in such gentle curves that it matched his mark. As for Ryeowook, she had the same thing as Yesung for a marker but hers was on her stomach. Ryeowook’s dress is cut in the middle, from the middle of her chest down to her navel because that’s where her marker was. It was an intricate tattoo that started from the chest and would spread down as it went to the stomach where it would all gather into this kidney looking shape that we still don’t know what it meant. The King said that we must not know what Ryeowook’s marker was because if she realized the truth to her mark, she would go into a rampage which would threaten her cleansing. Ryeowook was a shy fairy, and her wings were the most beautiful among us because her wings resembled that of an angel’s.

Kangin told me that he wanted me to go with him and Yesung as they did their usual fairy hanging out. I declined, saying that I just wanted to go fly around and meet the new fairies. Of course, that was a lie. I went back to the lake. But Kibum was there so I couldn’t do anything, so I went to another body of water and tried to open a portal by placing a blue flame into it. I hoped that it would work, and it did! A portal to the human world open and I flew up in joy!

“Ouch!”

I fell back and looked to see that I bumped into Donghae.

“Is that the portal?” Donghae stared at it.

“No!” I went in front of Donghae and spread my arms. “Let’s go back to your place, Donghae.”

“No,” Donghae grinned and shook his head. “I won’t tell Kibum. I just want to see the human world. If you show it to me, I won’t tell Kibum.”

I bit my lip. I was unsure about it, but Donghae kept on insisting.

“Please, Heechul! Please, please, please!”

“Fine!” I grabbed his arm and winked at him. “Let’s go to the human world!”

End of Chapter 2

Val's Corner: Okay, for my old readers, some of you might think that it's weird that I'm writing completely in 1st person since I always used to write in 3rd person with first person POV's here and there. The reason for this is because I'm experimenting right now because the book that I'm writing right now, well, I had to make it into a 1st person book when it was a 3rd person pov book. There are a lot of reasons like the flow of the book, the mystery, and the connection. Unlike writing a fanfic where the reader knows the characters, books are, well, characters have to come mysteriously and find a way to connect to the reader in either a positive/negative way.

Also, I haven't been rereading so total sorry for that :D I just write and post, that's it. No more reviewing... but let me explain! It's not because I'm bored or anything, it's because I have no time. I'm writing this fanfic while writing my book while working and much more. So right after writing this, it's like "post!" then I'll jump to my book, which, well, has most of my attention.

As of now, the book will be released in October so my friend and I are rushing all these editing, in which there are major editing that has to be done because my friend, who joined my editing team (happy me!), saw a lot of flaws that needed to be fixed. So... yeah, I'm rushing the editing to get the book out ASAP, and hopefully I'll still be able to continue to entertain you outside of the fanfic world :)
