Today was another free day. We decided to head over to Lamma Island, Hong Kong’s 3rd largest island I believe. We were interested in going when we found it had no cars, great beaches, and good seafood, with the latter of no interest to me. So we took a ferry to the island on an absolutely gorgeous day. When we first got onto the island we passed through tons of seafood restaurants with tanks outside where you could pick the fish you wanted to eat. It was really fascinating although a little gross and, let’s face it, smelly. Their native lobsters are crazy looking, with their tail looking like a glittering zebra and their body being covered with iridescent blue spots. I also saw what live shrimp look like, crazy insects. We went to lunch at a little sketchy restaurant which apparently had very recently opened. They had no English menu and were super slow, messed up mine and others’ orders, but eventually I got some good Japanese noodles that looked like worms with vegetables. Also in the village we saw lots of little shops and adorable dogs everywhere.
After exiting the main town area we began what was supposed to be a 1.5 hour hike. With our touristy nature I think it actually took maybe 4 hours or more. We climbed hills to get amazing views of the harbor, played on the rocks on the beach, entered ‘no entry’ caves that had begun to be dug for kamikazes during the war but were never completed, and went through a tiny fishing village. I loved it there. It was like a pedestrian paradise and was so peaceful and beautiful.
We headed home on the last ferry of the day exhausted but ready to hit the markets again. I got a good deal on an external hard drive. Others bought digital cameras, speakers, mp3 players and such. We then found a little place to have dim sum, which I did not partake in and had Buddha’s delight instead, which was great. Emily and I headed home soon after hoping to catch the group that was going out dancing, but we missed them and got to bed early instead. I hear they all had a really great time though and that we missed out. They promised to go again, but it was never the same scene. I woke up right before my 8:15 alarm, which was good because it meant the jet lag was starting to go away.
