I think I just figured out why China thinks Taiwan is theirs. I've been reading a travelouge from post WWII, and apparently the non-Communist government of China moved en-masse to Taiwan (then a part of China, though occupied by Japan) when they were ousted. At the time of this book, they had a government and an army, and were trying to prepare to move back in should the US support them or the masses become disaffected with Communism. It seems like a number of major governments thought recognizing the bulk of China, though Communist, was a better plan than recognizing the minority.

I'm sure that lots of people know this, but i finally clicked to me and I think it is neat.
