The Accents of Ya'll and Yore

The other day, I was talking to a friend of mine. He has what I consider to be a unique accent. He's from New Zealand but he's actually from a rural community on the southern island and that makes his accent a little more "redneckish" and "unrefined" as he put it.

According to him, he can identify the differences between Canadian and American accents just by listening to the cadence of words and the enunciation of certain consonants. For example, our friend John was born and raised in the Dallas-Fort Worth area but resides near Loughlin, Nevada now (about a 3-hour drive from Las Vegas, 4-hour drive from Phoenix and 4.5-hour drive from downtown Los Angeles) and he doesn't have the typical southern-U.S. accent. He sounds just like the regular average Joe.

I'm told that the Canadian accent is "obtuse" and lacking in grace whereas the average-Joe urbanite American accent is more fluid with it's use of apostrophes instead of vowels. It has more coordination than their American counterparts. Interesting stuff.

Tomorrow is the day.
