Halloween: Candle Superstitions
- A lit candle in a jack-o-lantern is done to keep evil spirits away.
- For good luck, burn black and orange candles on Halloween.
- Those who practice the black arts believe that carving the name(s) of their enemy or enemies on a skull shaped candle and burning it during the witching hour (midnight) on Halloween will bring them harm or even death.
- If a candle suddenly goes out, as if the wind blew it out, this is a sign that a ghost has come.
- If a candle is sputtering, dying out suddenly, or sparking, there is a presence if evil in the area. But if the flame is bright and strong, everything is all right.
- Always burn new candles on Halloween for good luck. Do not burn Halloween candles on any other day of the year, because this will cause bad luck. You may experience strange events over which you'll have no control.
- It's said to be an omen of bad luck to accidentally spill candle wax or burn yourself with the flame or wax. To remedy the situation, blow the flame out and relight the candle nine times in a row, each time repeating this charm:

- Omens can be read on Halloween by pouring melted wax from a white candle into a cauldron of cold water. Interpret the patterns formed by the wax as it hardens.
- Gazing into a flame of candle will allow you a glimpse into the future.
These apply to any other night
- If a candle flame emits a spark, you will receive good news. To find out who will send it, pay attention to the wax drippings. If it drips onto the right side, the sender will be male. The left - a female. If you can, try to determine the initials of the sender from the wax drippings.
- Light a candle with a yes/no question in mind. If the wax drips and builds up on the right side, the answer is yes. On the left - no.
- A clump of soot on the wick means that you will meet a stranger who'll become a lover.
- If a candle's flame burns blue, it's said that there is a spirit in the room.
- A candle flame can reveal who you love most. While looking into the flame, speak the name of each of your lovers or crushes. The flame will burn brightest when you say the name of the one you love most.
- Light 3 candles, designating a time (i.e. 1 month) to the first candle, two months to the second, and 3 months to the third. The last candle to burn out predicts the time when your wish will come true.
- A candle that refuses to light is a sign of rain. If the flame sways, it'll be windy. A sputtering flame signifies storms.
- It's bad luck if a candle goes out by itself or while being carried. It means an unfavorable ending to a situation, or even death. Still, if someone snuffs out the candle by accident, it's an omen that the person will soon get a wedding invitation.
