I've just come back from a week in Dorset. It's very beautiful, and luckily there were lots of things to see indoors. This was good because there was a persistant drizzle for most of the time I was there. Highlights include Blandford Costume Museum - a private museum of mostly 18th and 19th Century clothing and Chedder Gorge (I'm thinking of becoming a cheese pilgrim and going to Stilton next, I know it is around here somewhere).

Along the way I cam across this lady:
This is Joan Leweston. She is in Sherbourne Abbey. She died in 1579, but the tomb is dated 1584 when her husband John snuffed it. Her costume is beautiful and the details were very good: you can see the brocade pattern, puffs at the shoulders and rings on her fingers. I found her head wear interesting. It is quite simple, except for the wave on the top.

I wondered if anyone had seen / met / made head wear like this? I haven't been able to find much more about Joan (in an Internet search of the local archives), but there are more images and a little information here:

If anyone knows what the hat might have been made of or how it was constructed, please let me know. All information/guesses are welcome.
