He finds her bleeding near the boardwalk.
She’s half in the tide, curled into the sand, and it’s a thin trickle of red from nose to chin but soon she wakes, coughing water.
He knows her eyes will be blue.
Fingers roam to the back of her head, wincing -- apparently I fancy myself a Californian now, she drawls, still breathing hard. What I get for trying surfing.
He starts to help her stand (knows her hand will frame his just so) and guess I owe you, she smiles; no, he thinks, some nameless, distant grief -- guilt -- like a cool weight.
I don't think you do.
