A/N: Winner of third place for lost_in_108's Challenge #4, Fresh Start. Quite possibly the most literal interpretation of the prompt I could have come up with. *shrugs*

It's the phone that wakes him.
Then the pain -- white-hot -- and Daniel pulls at his T-shirt, finds only damp, unbroken flesh. (It's not right, he thinks, something is very not right.)
It rings again -- shrill; Essex's fall landscape still, silent outside -- and he lunges for it, hears his name (Dan?; there will never be a sweeter sound, he decides).
Her voice is thick with tears, even through the static; I think I died. He clutches the phone tighter -- everything's fine -- because she's alive and he's alive and it feels like a second chance.
(It's not one he deserves; he'll take it anyway.)
