why is it that odd numbers seem more random than even numbers?

I'm accruing family members at a slow but steady pace: My mom and Doogie a few days ago, John and his girlfriend Heidi tomorrow, and my dad on Thursday. Managed to contract a nasty stomach virus and lose 10 pounds though I'm sure they'll be back just as fast. Felt like a real person with a home and a family today while cooking Indian food with ( Read more... )

You are my everything friend. And it's okay to be a little dramatic sometimes. I love you. I hope that Indian food kicked Mormon ass.

“You thought I would change. I have not changed.”
“Do you take pride in your hurt?” Samuel asked. “Does it make you seem large and tragic?”
“I don’t know.”
“Well, think about it. Maybe you’re playing a part on a great stage with only yourself as audience.”

See! even stories can help us to understand how stories should be used to help us understand our lives instead of us trying to turn our lives into them!

This is funny because this concept came up in both separate finals today. One was literature where we were all throwing around concepts like "what is human" and "meta-narratives" and "memory as a prosthesis" and how narrative blah blah blah I don't think I understood it so I won't even pretend to. The second was in French, where we read this selection of a woman trying to write her autobiography and she totally couldn't, because she couldn't transform the normal boring miserable everyday things into "art" which is good in one way, I think. None of us are living some grand cosmic drama.

That said I'm glad a lot of people cheat a little, because even under the best of circumstances, biographical movies? Totally boring. I almost poked my eyes out with my straw in bored despair at The Aviator.

On a slightly contradictory note, sometimes roles can be good to help us realize how we relate to a certain person, because many roles in the world come from somewhat standard ways that people work together in a relationship (be it friendship, romance, familial, etc.), and by recognizing it as a certain type of relationship, we can appreciate it better or possibly improve it by recognizing shortcoming and faults (which are always hard to accept and recognize in one's self). But in doing this we should definitely recognize that it is a mind-exercise that is meant to better our understanding of things and not limit it. If it goes too far it becomes stereotyping which is the beginnings of racism, sexism, and many other nasty -isms where we over-classify people. E.g. if I find myself always flip-flopping in how I feel about someone, sometimes really liking them but other times being driven insane, I can classify it as a love-hate relationship (whatever that means) and view how people in real life and stories have dealt with things vaguely ( ... )
