A Little Background:
The Women's Bar Association had their annual Gala last night (the bar's biggest even of the year, not just the women's bar biggest event, but the bar's biggest event period). I heard about this a while ago. Tickets were $75.00 so when I first heard about it, it was in a "that'd be awesome, too bad I'm not going" way. Well, then my school purchased a table at the gala (10 seats). The Womens group raffled the tickets, I really wanted to enter, but never got around to it (thus I did not win). Then the Women's Bar sent out an e-mail saying they needed more volunteers, and if you volunteered you could go for free. I e-mailed them and told them I wanted to volunteer, but by then they already had enough people so that was also a no.

A Little More Background:
My horoscope for yesterday said that I would have an unexpected get-together or outing with friends, and it would make me feel like part of a community, or something to that effect. When I read this I thought, how am I supposed to get together with friends when they all live so far away, plus its a weekday, and generally felt sorry for myself.

Thats Enough Background:
So yesterday afternoon the women's group sent out an email saying that one of the raffle winners had canceled and so the first person to call the number on the e-mail would get the ticket. I got the ticket. So I rushed home, showered, combed my hair (I know, who would have thunk) put on my pink suit, and rushed out.

I don't know any of the women in the women's group, so once I got there I was all by myself in this sea of lawyers. So I'm standing there, kind of scanning the room, and enjoying the hors d' oeuvres that are being brought around. A women approaches me, introduces herself, and tells me shes on the board of the Women's Bar. We chit chat, and I tell her how I don't actually know any of the people in my group, so I have to wait until dinner (this is the cocktail hour) when we all sit at our table to find them. She thinks its awful that a little 1L would have to attend her first Women's Bar Gala by herself, and ushers me around the room, introducing me to the other memebers of the board, and her lawyer friends. She seems to know just about everyone there. All those lawyers were sooo nice. So Joan (the woman who was my new friend) is a selectmen in her town (like a council woman) so she had to leave early. As she was leaving she gave me all her information, and insisted that I call her if I have any problems or questions later on, and that I e-mail her so she can have my e-mail address to send me e-mails about events and so forth. She also said I should join her mentoring group (mentoring for women lawyers) so I sould call her if I'm interested.  It was the sweetest thing. Once dinner started I found my group, they were all very nice too, and dinner was great. So my horoscope was kind of right, I definitely had an unexpected outing and get-together. And it was an even that definitely inspired a community feeling, especially the way Joan treated me, introducing me to all her colleagues, and including me, it was great.

Observations About the Gala:
1) There are a LOT of cute young women lawyers out there, so guys its not too late to meet and marry a hot, moneyed, AND educated woman    (and by guys I mean Suz, and Renneho)
2) This is the second time for this observation, but when law-people get together there is a lot of alcohol involved
3) Actually, the other law get-togethers I had gone to also involved waiters bringing snacks around to everyone, so thats always good
4) I was the only person wearing any color, lawyers wear blue, black, and grey (there was an occasional red, but that was the only color)
5) There were a surprising number of guys in attendance

So that was the Gala.
