I have lately seen photographs of cupcakes described as fairy cakes when clearly they were not.
While all fairy cakes are cup cakes not all cup cakes are fairy cakes.
A fairy cake does not have frosting on top.
To make a plain cupcake into a fairy cake you slice off the top, cut in half to make 2 wings and stick back on to cake in wing position with whipped cream.
If a cup cake does not have wings it is not a fairy cake.
Edit: that was my opinion, I seem to be outvoted on twitter at least.
With wings also know as butterfly cakes I am told.
