Deep Thoughts: Gay Rights and Old Ladies in Fishnests

Nov 05, 2009 16:20

Two things:

1. So, normally, since I'm not gay, I don't talk much about gay rights with my friends. While I tend to agree with everything my gay rights advocate friends say, and I think most people know I'm big on gay rights, I keep my opinions on said matter simple and direct because I don't want to seem like I'm butting into areas that I couldn't personally be attacked for. I know I'm a fairly flamboyant guy, and my parents are lesbians, but I'm still just a straight guy. All that being said, I'm not sure that I agree with the idea that Americans are too afraid and hateful to give gay people rights. Of course, there really are some folk who are just too religiously brain washed and conservative, and believe that gay people are looking at them and their children like giant candy bars, or the devils handy work, or something. Those people really are hateful and afraid; and unfortunately loud. The hateful beings are the problem makers, but not the problem itself. I think that the majority of Americans are unfortunately actually just too lazy to think about the fact that gay people are just PEOPLE. They're just looking for the same things that straight Americans take for granted in their lives. It doesn't blossom in their minds to care, and since the truly hateful folk are loud and intimidating, they are ready to nod and make the situation go away. The problem is, they don't understand that their unwillingness to listen is the reason that the situation keeps coming up in the political and social arenas. If they would put a bit of effort into using their minds, the fight for gay rights wouldn't seem so overwhelming. The lovely and mostly friendly gay Americans, which are all around us btw, are not going to teach kids about bum sex in school or start army like recruiting stations across our nation. From what I understand, it's hard enough for gay folk to find dates sometimes, let alone plan to try and take over the world like a bond villain. Americans lazy attitude and stupid non-caring is what really gets my goat about the gay rights battle. I think that most American moderates just stopped and listened, they'd think that the hateful and fear spreading folk sounded just as dumb as the rest of us do. Things can change when people just try a little. It worked that way for the top Maine politician in the state. He realized he didn't want Gay marriage and rights because... he really didn't understand the issues behind wanting the rights. A few hours of basic conversation and research and he changed his mind. So... in conclusion, Americans, are we not smarter then the hateful clumps in our society that enjoying spreading fear? I hope someday soon we will be for all our sakes.

Hope I didn't offend anyone with that. If I did, I sworry.

2. I saw a woman on the train this morning that really is buggin' my mind. She was in her mid 60's-ish, and, as she ought to at her age was starting to sag a bit. Her face was dropping down in her cheeks, her belly was falling, she had big blue veins in her legs and arms, and her knees sagged. This is fine, I'm sure she's lived a full life and that's what bodies do. But she was wearing a mini skirt and fish net stockings with 70's ankle boots. Never mind that it was 45ish out and it seemed cold, but fishnets? Really? At first glance I thought, well a party maybe? But on a thursday morning? Even a work party would be odd. I hope it was, because I personally feel that, at some ages, fishnets ought to be... home wear. That goes for men too....
