BOOK: Hard to believe, but according to my records, I've never actually recommended
The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery in this space! This novel for adults is quite different from the author's usual children's fare. Valancy is an old maid of 29 (eep...) whose family has always repressed her. When she learns she has one year to live, she decides on a course of rebellion! This book is charming (many laughs as Valancy lets her biting wit off its leash) and features a satisfyingly unconventional romance. Yet the novel touches on mature questions, too - about how we become the people we are, and how much of that we can control.
FILM: Another one I can't believe I haven't done before:
Ladyhawke starring Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer, and Michelle Pfeiffer. This '80s fantasy film is dark, stirring, and passionate. Set in medieval times (but with a cracktastic electronica soundtrack), it tells the tale of star-crossed lovers under a curse that keeps them apart, and cowardly but warmhearted thief (Broderick) who sets out to bring them together again. Also: wolves! hawks! swords! I loved this as a teenager and love it still.
SONG: To add to my list of awesome "viva la revolucion!"-type music: my latest addiction, A Fine Frenzy's
Stood Up. Any song in which a line is dramatically shouted... I'm there ♥
