DWho S3: late to the party again

Jan 16, 2009 10:48

Watched the end of the Martha season the other night, and now I finally understand all the fuss about John Simm. What brilliant casting that was! For the the Master to come off as the Doctor's sort of evil twin they had to have an actor who could sell it, and he did. Simm and Tennant were so well-matched: in energy, glibness, borderline mania, and (I must add) brand of sex-appeal. Neither one's anything special (imo) in a still photograph, but in action there's a vitality that's decidedly attractive. Magnetism, you could call it. I don't think they made as good a use of the Master in the end as they might have, but it was still a quality set of episodes.

I knew from S4 that Martha was engaged to a doctor so it was nice to actually meet that character. I'd love to know how she managed the introduction. Followed him into a bar, I assume, and said "Don't I know you from a parallel universe, baby?"* How ironic that he's played by the guy who, in the modernized Much Ado About Nothing, is head-over-heels for Billie Piper!

Now, though I've missed random eps here and there, I'll consider myself caught up with DWho if I can finish the last four of S4. Dunno when that's likely to happen, with the semester starting Tuesday, but apparently there's no hurry. 2010? Seriously?

And finally, for your hilarity, the worst picture of Richard Armitage ever taken. Pretty sure he could wander into Helm's Deep unnoticed, except that he'd frighten the children.

Will he please quit Robin Hood already? Grow a sense of pride, man!

*And he said, "Who am I to blow against the wind?"
