Utility man is a kind of superhero

So what's funnier: the fact someone asked me to borrow a voltmeter, or that I have one?

I've always enjoyed being the Utility Man; the guy you call when you're missing that special cable or esoteric adapter. Not only is it useful to have those things on hand yourself, but it makes you feel loved when someone else needs them. And every group needs at least one of us, because without Utility Man, you're stuck trying to torque nuts off your car tires by throwing rocks at them. Not fun.

Being a Photographer is actually a subset of being Utility Man. Those photos will be precious to you in 20 years, when you'll really want them. (devilish--angel, I am painfully aware you want your photos now. Give me 12 more hours. Please?) Plus being Prolific Photographer makes me feel the same kind of love as being Utility Man. I've lost count of the number of times I've walked into the Imprint office and heard, "Say, Davenport. Have you taken a photo of $X in the past week we can use for $Y ?"

That's why I have so much junk around; most of it is like the voltmeter: sits collecting dust 99% of the time, but fucking useful when you need it.

Batman didn't have any super powers. Just a lot of tools (and the balls'o'steel to use them). Remember that.

One final note: Mother, I know you're reading this. Know what I don't have yet but would make a great Christmas gift? A soldering iron. Doesn't have to be anything fancy. It's just that until now I've had the luxury of borrowing the use of Physics department soldering irons, but that won't last forever and campus is far away right now. Plus it goes with the multimeter, right?
