Queen's student union to wage war on fun

Mar 30, 2010 13:44

On the cover of today's National Post, there's a story titled, "To 'oppressed' sumos: Queen's is sorry" Basically, the story is this: a group was going to use "sumo suits" as part of a fun event to raise money for the food bank, a group complained, the event got cancelled. I am not making any of this up.

The Alma Mater Society yesterday published a two-page apology and cancelled a food-bank fundraiser scheduled for today, which was to feature two Sumo suits. The letter scolds the student government's own executive for "marginalizing members of the Queen's community" and failing to "critically consider the racist meaning behind [the fundraiser]."

It also vows to discourage other campus groups from using the suits, owned by the school's athletic department.

I hope this sort of political correctness never comes to Waterloo. I honestly think the Alma Mater Society should have been unapologetic in this case. I am disgusted.
Edit: Ugh, I mis-posted. Please comment here instead.
