The last reason I had for keeping cable went away, but that was a while ago. For how little I watch(ed) the expense was not justifiable (Jay watch{ed,es} even less) so a few days I ago I finally canceled the cable service ( Read more... )

We quit cable some time ago, and purchased a small digital antenna (around $30) and we pick up 20 some channels. Pretty cool! All of the stations are coming from 30+ miles away, and are typically clear. Occasionally during a storm or whatever we get some digital trouble, but for the most part, it's like having cable. But free. And without the shopping network. *Grin*

My folks are out in the country and so never had cable and stopped bothering with satellite a while ago. While they are having some issues with digital TV, when I saw it while visiting it did look good when it worked - multiple channels and at least one weather channel in the mix. I suggested my sister (living in the Twin Cities, she doesn't need much of an antenna to get a bunch of channels) get a converter a while ago and when she did it was quite an improvement.

I'm not sure how much I can get here. Fairmont is "served equally poorly" by surrounding areas and I don't know of anyone who successfully gets TV 'free-air' here. Ideally, I'd like to get ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, and Fox. Many stations are well up in the UHF range, and thus seem less likely to be received successfully, unless I went with a large (long, high gain) antenna with a mast-mounted pre-amp and a rotator setup. I don't see that happening soon, if it happens at all.

I am curious, what does AntennaWeb claim you need to get what you do?

The new digital rabbit ears are of a very different design from the old traditional analog "loop and two whips" model, apparently tuned to better to the digital signal. I'm not sure if they include converter boxen... I assume you rescanned the converter box, though ( ... )

I've done the rescan a few times. I do like having the weather there, but I do understand that stations will replace it with something more profitable if they can find something and not annoy people too much by removing the weather.
