Saturday went better, though the con suite seemed rather sparse compared to previous years. That seems to be a trend this year as the con suite at Penguicon didn't seem to be what it was last year either. The booster/sponsor brunch was the usual good gathering and this time I had the nerve to sample the available sushi. We were full enough and wanted to be back for some things and left a bit before most and wound up giving
2_gryphon a ride back to the hotel so he could make his schedule.
Jeff Goode had a script that being used as a Radio Play at RCFM and
jmaynard tried out for it and got a part. He was busy with that, and the rehearsal, and the performance. When he wasn't doing that, he was helping to judge the 'fursuit swimsuit' competition - in the Tron outfit, which fit the 'RCFM Sci-Five' theme. He didn't have that much time between things and so spent much of the day in the outfit.
I wanted to make the fursuit parade, so I didn't hang around for the entire radio play casting. The assembly went fairly well and most of the parade went well. I think I made a wrong turn after going through the dealer's area and someone else was credited with the mistake. Oops. That or someone else made a bigger mistake and mine wasn't quite as noticed.
I went to the 'iron fursuit maker' bit wondering if it would be some fast work with fun fur or some such, but it turned out to be newspaper, construction paper, aluminum foil, and tape. I figured I'd watch or end up wearing something. I had not figured on making anything as I don't do well in such conditions. I am not that good at doing such things, certainly not with surprise or limited materials in a limited time. Got stuck doing some stuff anyway and it was as bad as I'd feared. The real artists did much better which made the fox outfit I wound up wearing not all bad. A couple things provided a last-minute inspiration. They were an old Coors Light six pack case and my badge holder. Since I wasn't "me" for this, I wanted a different name and Calamity Fawx was created... and so I spent some time as a loud-mouthed redneck fox, playing up as if was Calamity Cougar or something similar. I didn't expect to win, whatever winning might have meant, but the yammering on about not using newspaper did nothing for me. Just because something is available doesn't mean it makes sens to use it. Maybe it's an Iron Chef thing, but I don't bother watching that show. Adding stuff just to add stuff... seems rather pointless and counterproductive. Add what is needed, and no more.
Caught up with
krag_carbine in the dealer's area when he didn't have a crowd as he seemed to have Friday and got some information to him that should hopefully advance a (paid for) project that was initiated at MFF and seems to have stalled. Then I got out of the way so as not to impede what custom he might have. Either Saturday or Sunday I also got a page in a sketchbook filled done by him.
The Booster/Guest of Honor appreciation party was also good. There was a small chocolate fountain and plenty of stuff to dip in it. There was a punch that was 'Rocket Fuel' which I speculate was so named as a few stages of that stuff and you'd be in orbit. I talked with the Carspeckens for a while and was told I have something to look forward to as a minor character I like in their comic is likely to have an appearance or appearances again in the next few months. When I left it was already quite late and so I didn't go looking for anything more to do, but went to get some by then much needed sleep.
