Another DW/TW Drabble

Drabble written for
rose_cat who stumped me at the Stump the Author meme, and wanted me to write about Tosh's first trip in the TARDIS.

Experienced as she was when it came to technology, especially of the extraterrestrial kind, the Doctor had expected Toshiko to ask hundreds and thousands of questions about the TARDIS, and perhaps actually understand some of his answers. With her almost instinctive understanding of machines, she might even have seen through the overly complicated nonsense he made up when he had no idea how something worked.

She didn’t ask.

The rotor went up and down as they fell through the vortex, ready to land in the first location he had chosen just for her, the ship waiting for the Doctor to pull the lever. He wanted to give his new companion time to get over the initial astonishment the way everyone did within minutes, once their minds had accepted that this ship was too alien for them to comprehend and decided to ignore it. But Toshiko kept circling the console, looking at this and that, sometimes reaching for a button or a lever, but never quite touching it. As if it was some kind of altar, the Doctor thought.

Eventually, she stopped and turned to look at him. “I don’t understand it,” she said, her voice breathless with amazement. “I don’t see how it works. Not even in the slightest. This is totally beyond me.”

And her eyes were shining.
