It's finally come, this episode. Yay!
At first, I wasn't impressed. I wasn't disappointed either, but it didn't really pull me in. And then UNIT showed up. I'm enough of a Classic Who fan to be in love with UNIT.
I'm in love with UNIT because they totally fanboy the Doctor. And they are married to the Doctor. And they always have half their staff run beside their vehicles in an emergency, so they can only drive at walking pace and most of their armed guys must be totally out of breath by the time they arrive anywhere - and they're still better than that other alien-fighting organisation. That guy deserves some credit for not saying "We need experts. Let's call Torchwood!"
"Did you just salute?"
"....no." = > Win.
The desert gave the episode a minimalistic feel I didn't mind at all. The insect-aliens were so retro and hilarious it had to be done on purpose - win! And there was phone call win, and the Doctor totally turned down the potential love interest, and spoke an alien language, and got repeated declarations of love from an overenthusiastic Welsh scientist (who reminded me of Owen for some reason). In other words, the episode was made of awesome.
Oh, and the flying bus. I love me some flying bus. A flying red doubledecker bus and a blue police box in one picture, and it's impossible not to think of Iris Wildthyme. Crashed as it was, the bus even was smaller on the inside. Only Iris was missing, sadly.
"You look Time Lord." I have waited for so long for this to be acknowledged. To the Doctor, humans are the aliens who just happen to look like his people. Oh, thank you, awesome episode!
No one died (after he said they wouldn't). For once the Doctor got to keep his promise. I really liked the episode, and I think I'll enjoy it even more on second viewing. It was nice and happy and made me laugh and squee and even flail on ocassion - and then the future seeing lady had to give me a first taste of the heartbreak I will be feeling on Christmas. This special has once again reminded me that David Tennant is awesome, and I will miss him, very much.
