In this material universe, physical appearance is very important. I wonder if people intrinsically like beautiful things or has it been imposed on us by culture (true and false). I think there must be some evolutionary/biological basis to this that has been blown out of proportion by culture today, notably the media. Such worship of the physical with little or no concern for the non-physical limits our capacity to truly understand other things. It makes us superficial, to judge based on what is seen/heard. Do we want this? Even if we want to resist, we have to go against the system and that is not easy. There's this academic who has exposed the sexism and violence against women in advertisements but he doesn't seem able to do much to change it. Yes, he has sensitized many of us but that is the first step. We must be instrumental in changing this or anything that reduces the value of the person. Have we faught for democracy and human rights so we have the freedom and the right to be simplictic, stereotypical and shallow?
