Oh, animanga...well, I really liked Hamatora: The Animation, Samurai Flamenco, and Fractale recently. And His Favorite by Tanaka Suzuki is one of my favorite manga series ATM.
...Though, my current obsession on the animanga front is a series called Knights of Sidonia. I picked up some manga volumes for it at a bookstore awhile ago because the plot summary on the back seemed rather interesting...and subsequently I kind of became hooked. XD An anime version even started up recently (with two episodes out ATM and the third is getting released this Sunday)...and I really like that adaptation too overall: they're staying very true to the manga source material for the most part (and some of the changes they have made I'm okay with because they're expanding upon characters and actually are done mainly because it helps the story flow better in the anime version since the manga has a rather unique story approach). It's a science-fiction series first and foremost, with mecha elements (though it's rather different from other mecha series...haha, a lot of reviewers for it even praise it because normally they hate the mecha genre but they like this series XD)...and it also contains heavy undertones of psychological, warfare, and monster themes as it details the remnants of humanity's fight to stay alive after the solar system was destroyed by a race of planet-sized aliens that survive off of organic matter and are nearly impossible to kill. The science in the series is really well-thought out and very realistic, the plot is mature and dark and can break your heart but can still on occasion have moments of warmth or humor in it in it, there's political/ethical/moral debates out the wazoo, plot elements are presented in an interesting way and there's actually several unique/refreshing spins on them, and the main characters in particular are all really likable and many are quite relatable/understandable when gone into more. I...really hadn't been sure what I'd expected with the series at first since I wasn't familiar with any of the other series the manga-ka had done previously, but I kind fell in love with the amount of detail and depth in the Knights of Sidonia world all the same. :)

Oh, I've heard about Knights of Sidonia, I'll give it a try when I have spare time because your explanations sound very interesting! I've never been a fan of mecha as well, but it's worth to try!
And thank you for the other recommendations!
