Crossedge Chapter 00.
The sun rose that morning just like any other. The quiet apartment overlooking the sea. The sounds of seagulls greeting the sun as they raced to get their meal for the morning. This was a sign of a new day, a sign of change. And also a sign that some things don’t change. Namely Jono being late for school.
The sound of seagulls was quickly replaced by the sound of Jono’s cell phone blaring. His ring tone was “Wheel In The Sky” by Journey. He shot up out of bed as he did every morning. Frantically he felt around for his phone knocking over several cans of soda and a miniature snap fit model of a giant robot. Jono didn’t worry about this because he had already made a habit of rebuilding his model at the end of the day. Finally he finds his phone.
“Jono! What the hell are you doing!? Why is it that every morning it takes me harping on you to get you up out of bed and to school! Look the last bell is going to ring in about a minute! Get your butt down here! Gah! There are only 3 weeks left of high school for us! Can you be on time once!? HURRY!” berated the voice on the phone before abruptly hanging up.
Hopping out of bed he flung on his shirt and jacket and rushed down the hall and out the front door. In a matter of moments he was well on his way.
Jono was the kind of person who didn’t take his life so seriously. He took each day as it came and knew well enough that even if he slept that extra hour life would still go on without him. And in the grand scheme of things what would matter if he was a little late. Yeah he was the kind who wouldn’t worry about anything even if impending doom was staring him right in the face. That’s who he was… And in a matter of hours all that would change.
Fortunately for Jono, he made it to school with just seconds to spare. Of course this helped that he lived less then a block from the school. In fact this was the earliest he had gotten to school in months.
“There you are! Hurry up!” a girl would stand there at the gate waving him down. Her name was Pandara, she was Jono’s childhood friend, they grew up together, and she thought of him as her idiotic older brother who was hopelessly lost without her there to take care of him.
“Sorry Pan! I guess I over slept again.” Jono apologized rubbing the back of his head in embarrassment.
“Again!? Try for the 500th time!” Pandara huffed. This of course was an understatement he made it a point to be late to every school function class included since entering high school.
“Hey! Trust me it wont happen again!” Jono replied. The bell rang before Pandara could utter anything else. They rushed to their home room.
Eight hours passed and the bell for school to end sounded triumphantly. And per his routine Jono met up with Pandara at the gate of the school.
“Hey there Pan! I’m starved! You wanna grab some munchies?” Jono smirked.
“Yeah I think I could go for something.” she replied.
They walked to the boardwalk as they often did. The boardwalk was the place to be, filled with places to eat, arcades, some stores for shopping, and a park. The two would stop at the Diamond Dipper. A burger joint at the end of the pier. Unbeknownst to them that a mysterious figure was wandering in the shadows.
Behind dark goggles the man walked. He looked completely out of place. Dressed in a thick jacket, heavy boots, and gloves. Across his back he hung a long object bundled up in a tarp. He held a strange device in one hand, and a suitcase in the other.. Across the top of the device it read “Makio Corp”. A prominent business that boasts they’re “solving tomorrows problems today.” Suddenly the device alarmed.
“There” the man would shout. It was in the sky, the very fabric of this world would ripple, a roar would sound from within the distortion. The man swung the object that hung on his back around, revealing it was a powerful cannon. He loaded in one of its specialized rounds, took aim and released the full compliment of his round into the rip in an attempt to seal it. However it had no effect. The ripple grew into a tear, and from behind the veil of reality a horrible creature broke loose. Tackling an innocent bystander upon landing.
Jono heard the roar and quickly ran out of the Diamon Dipper to see what it was. The beast stampeded down the boardwalk trampling people left and right grabbing one up in its mouth and chomping down.
The strange man leapt in front of Jono hitting the beast square in the face with the butt of his cannon.
“Get back! Or else forfeit your life!” He barked.
Jono was frozen by what was in front of him. The strange figure was knocked back dropping the suitcase, it would skid across the floor to Jono’s feet. The shock jarred the case open revealing a wrist mounted device. The strange figure reached for it as the beast brought its massive foot crashing down on the figure.
“Kid! Use the watch!” He called out in pain. Jono stared at the device intently. Pandara rushed out from the Diamond Dipper.
“Jono!” she called. Suddenly reality punched Jono in the face. He reached for the device wrapping it around his wrist. He held his right arm up to the sky. A look of seriousness ran across his face.
“Henshin!” he called out bringing his hand down in a swift motion and punching his open palm.
