Hi. I haven't used lj in a long time. I mainly used it so my dad could read about my thoughts and he died suddenly in September.. So I just saw no reason. But I remembered how kind and helpful you all were years ago when I had some question, so I thought I'd turn here now. I'm getting a copper IUD inserted tomorrow and very, very scared. I hoped

When I went off HBC and got the IUD inserted, it took my body a while to adjust to the lack of hormones. I spotted for almost two months and nothing I tried (even briefly going on another pill) changed that much. Then, one day it stopped. I'd been on hormonal birth control for five years at that point.
I don't think weight has much to do with anything. The doctor will probably do an ultrasound to see the position and size of your cervix if they haven't already. I know some cervixes are smaller than others anc might make the IUD harder to insert. I think the insertion took less than five minutes, at least the painful parts.
Getting used to the IUD was super easy. As I said, it hurt for a few seconds. I went to the doctor by myself and I did not really feel safe to drive myself home. I've already made arrangements for when I change my IUD later this month to have someone drive me. I had pretty persistent cramps for a day and took some tylenol and slept it off. The next day, I was mostly fine. I don't think I was advised against physical activity at the time aside from sex. Initially, my partner had problems with the strings poking him but when I went for my check-up I asked for them to be trimmed. There haven't been any complaints since. I know some doctors tell you to check the strings once a month but I don't because my strings are too short for me to reach. I am careful to always break the suction before pulling out my menstrual cup although I seriously doubt that it would be powerful enough to pull the IUD out.
