One of the questions ask me at my audition for the "Vagina Monologues" was "What does Feminism mean to you?"
I thought that answering this question would be a good start to the Vaginalogue.
Feminism is power. It is the power to be myself now and actualize my future self. It is the power to act against passivity. It is the power to change the world.
I stumbled across feminism rather unwittingly when I took Women's Studies 020E in the summer of 2006. It was six weeks of class that changed the way I viewed myself and the world. I began to visit Feminist blogs daily and seek out books on Feminist theories or social issues.
I began to understand patriarchal culture more clearly. All the little things that I always thought were wrong but "normal" came to light. Like being cat-called when walking down the street, being the "good girl" while also being "sexy", knowing that wimmin get paid less than men for the same job but accepting it because of excuses like "wimmin get pregnant and have babies".
Finally knowing that I have the knowledge and power to be who I truly want to be and am instead of some socially constructed idea of who I am suppose to be has been so freeing.
Unfortunately, by having your eyes open, one sees far more injustice in the world. I see something everyday that saddens or enrages me. But it also keeps me going. I know there is so much more work for Feminists and Feminism to do and I will not be stopped by inequality, I will be fueled by it!
I joined the V-day/"Vagina Monologues" movement this year because I am tired of sitting around and talking about injustice, I want to do something about it. I am also looking for a Feminist Community and it seems like I have come into a group of fantastic wimmin!
