OOC: Survey of death and destruction

Aug 16, 2010 02:34

Freaking stole the hell out of this from Kaito. 8| Copied most of it from the one I did on my other account, but changed the answers a little bit.

Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?

Probably no taller than 5'5", I'd imagine. He's very thin and willowy to the point of appearing a bit scrawny, not toned or anything. His body is tight, not overly muscular, but despite the fact that he eats, and eats a lot, he's really quite skinny. And probably one of the shortest characters in a series known for being full of tall, lean pretty boys. Even Asuka is slightly taller than him.

2. How old is he?

Nineteen now. 8D

3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?

Pretty well, I think. He doesn't slouch or anything, so I guess it's safe to say he stands pretty tall and proud. Lack of confidence doesn't really show in his posture, to say the least.

4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?

Considering he travels and walks a lot, he's definitely fit. His build only adds to that impression, since the kid doesn't have a whole lot of fat on him. Juudai just never stops eating and never stops moving, making him pretty healthy. He sleeps a lot, but still is a teenage boy with energy to burn, and consequently winds up running around often. Also, he travels completely on foot except where physically impossible, like crossing the ocean, which probably contributes. No deformities or disabilities.

5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?

Not overly graceful or anything, but he's not especially clumsy, either. It's not impossible for him to trip over himself if he gets a bad start on running, but that rarely happens. He rarely stops to think about his actions before doing them unless it's in a moment where it really matters, so motions tend to happen suddenly and without hesitation.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?

Well, considering he's the fandom bicycle... I mean, um. Juudai's pretty handsome to most people who look for such things, as he lands right in the middle of the scale of most things physically, balancing him out quite well. Chances are he's not terribly unattractive in the eyes of others, considering he's had a minimum of two canon characters fall in love with him, and at least two more debatably so. Your mileage may vary, naturally, but he seems like a fairly attractive guy at first glance; he doesn't really bother with worrying about physical appearance by nature, but odds are that he'd think he was reasonably attractive if asked his opinion on it.

7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?

Asian, light, clear, a little on the pale side, but not much. No scars, surprisingly. He's the main character of a shounen anime, what else could he ever be? :|

8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.

Oh, Yu-Gi-Oh hair. Here we go. Well, Juudai's hair is brown near the ends and orangey at the top, but his hair is probably the most realistic of the three protagonists, though that isn't saying a whole lot. It's a little shaggy and long, medium texture, and totally windswept. Not that he doesn't take care of it, but it kind of becomes a messy mop all on its own. Not thick and ratty, but not fine, either.

9. What color are his eyes?

Same as his hair, a rich, earthen brown. Except when he's gone boatlights, in which case the left eye is citric orange, while the right one is a lush green, both of which are striking and almost unnatural.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?

Not that I know of. Not in this version of canon, but I have others...

11. What are his chief tension centers?

Shoulders and feet, if I'm reading that question right? Shoulders are pretty common, and his feet because he walks... a lot.

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?

He had a few copies of his red uniform back home, but they're growing small on him. He loves red, and apparently black as well, so dark and/or vivid colors, or, alternatively, earthy colors -- and those are the ones that look best on him, too. He's not really one to show off his body, but likes sharp styles, as long as they're not too flashy or outlandish.

13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?

He'll probably wear that damn red uniform until he just can't squeeze himself into it anymore, but other than that, he goes for things that fit comfortably. Not quite baggy, but enough so that he doesn't have to force himself into them.

14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?

Man, he'll only wear a uniform if it's mandatory. And only if it's red. Otherwise, he probably avoids jobs that require uniforms, heh. And hell if you'll ever get him into a suit for longer than five minutes.

15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?

BOXERS. With kitty faces on them. It is totally canon.

Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?

Deep, masculine... it's clear he's gone through puberty now, since his voice is deeper than when he started out in GX. A little nasally at times, but generally very smooth.

2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?

Pretty loudly and fluidly. Like with movements, he rarely thinks before he talks unless it's a serious response he has to consider. It usually just... comes out.

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?

Since he's Japanese, he has a very heavy Japanese accent, and has trouble pronouncing loan words at times. No tics, unlike some of his friends (Shou, Kenzan, Daitokuji).

4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?

Japanese is his mother tongue, and he probably knows enough English to get by, plus whatever he's picked up from visiting other countries. Considering it's the universal language, more or less, he's got some understanding of English, but if you speak really quickly in it, he'll probably stare at you dumbly or go "what?"

5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?

Doubtful.

6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?

Yes, though I suppose if not thinking before he talks counts as "impromptu", because he occasionally says something rather thoughtless or something that can be construed the wrong way.

7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?

He falls somewhere in the middle, I think. I mean, he's no politician or public orator, but he can speak casually and understandably without a million words inserted in-between.

Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?

Street-smart, definitely. He did absolutely horribly on tests in school, but in practical exams, he passed with no trouble at all, and it holds true even after school. Ask him about literature or any intellectual topic that involves some sort of study or learning and he'll kind of look at you blankly and go "huh?"

2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?

Definitely on his feet, at least in duels. He's known for thinking quickly and being resourceful, as well as being lucky as hell. Probably outside of duels, too, since I can't imagine he takes much time to think about what he's going to do before doing it, like anything else.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?

Maybe once upon a time he was idealistic, but now he's very much practical and mostly realistic, I think. He relies on instinct most of the time, especially when he duels, as well as in virtually everything else he does. Thinking isn't his strong suit in general.

4. What kind of education has the character had?

Up to high school. He went to your standard elementary/middle schools in Japan, then to Duel Academia -- which a lot of people would laugh at, but in his world it's a very respected boarding school. And just because he didn't get good grades doesn't mean he's not smart, just... not particularly book-smart.

5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?

Dueling. Period. His interests are surprisingly narrow in this regard, because a lot of them trace back to it alone. His interest in spirits and the supernatural? Stems from the spirits of his cards that he can communicate with and summon. And drawing, too -- occasionally he'll doodle his spirits and hero monsters almost exclusively like he did when he was a kid, though he's no artist by any means.

Other things that don't involve children's card games, though, are certain sports (baseball and... fishing), space and the study of the universe (he's not a scientist, but he finds the subject fascinating and always has), and comic books, particularly ones that involve traditional superheroes.

6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?

Extrovert. He definitely attracts friends like a magnet to metal, and unless he thinks they're genuinely not worth befriending at all, he will usually treat them with the same kind of consideration he treats all his friends with.

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?

Generally cheerful, though less so than before. He's less optimistic and more level than when he started out, though he tends to lean more on the positive side of things unless he's really in a rut. He typically doesn't blow up at people unless it's a "straw that broke the camel's back" sort of situation, or they do something that really gets under his skin the first time around -- which would have to be pretty bad and pretty personal to accomplish such a thing.

8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?

He seems like an open-minded person, and subsequently treats things newly introduced to him with your basic amount of respect and curiosity. He likes friends, and tends to be very accepting of people and not question their behavior or motives unless they give him reason to do so. He mostly has no qualms about being around others, and isn't typically that uncomfortable in crowds of strangers or anything.

9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?

React -- again, thinking's not his strong suit, so planning ahead only happens when he's working with someone who suggests "hey, we should do this and that ahead of time". He's more of a person who lets things happen and then deals with them when he gets to them, which has caused problems for him in the past.

10. Which is his default: fight or flight?

Fight. A real man never runs away from a duel... or a bad situation.

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?

He's pretty good-humored, and his own sense is pretty mischievous. He's not beyond good-natured pranks or poking fun at someone innocently, as long as it doesn't cross over into the realm of the malicious. I can't see him being particularly well-versed in bathroom humor, though...

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?

Not really.

13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?

Two of them: the moment he sent Yubel into space, and the moment he caused the death of his friends in the Dark World. The former led to the latter in a chain of events, but even so, both were affected by and directly affected who he was, and quite heavily at that. His essentially killing/backstabbing his friends still weighs on him heavily, to tell the truth. Oh, and let's not forget fusing with Yubel as well to start him on his "journey to adulthood".

14. What does he fear?

It seems like your standard personal fear, but probably failing to protect those he cares about from trouble. He's not afraid of a lot, but what fears he does have are rooted in his relationships -- on that note, probably losing his friends due to carelessness is on that list as well, and not necessarily losing in the sense of dying, either.

15. What are his hopes or aspirations?

To be able to raise awareness of spirits and the intangible. It's a very canon-exclusive dream, one he can't accomplish in an alternate world, which really hurts him. Pokemon can be nice, but he misses his spirits and his card games dearly.

16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?

The aspect of his past in which he betrayed his friends, for those who don't already know, but more importantly -- that he feels he may not have actually changed all that much since then.

Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.

He loved his parents, and they loved him, but they're simply never around, and so it wasn't a particularly strong bond they held. It was your default familial parents-and-child relationship, but little more, since they just never had time to spend with him.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
No siblings here. Despite what Mary Sue authors will try to tell you.

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?

Not that he's ever been in touch with. He wasn't even close to his own immediate family, so it's really not an important facet of his life as a result. And since he was alone most of his childhood, it can be assumed family reunions were not a regular thing.

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?

He considers Shou a sort of "little brother" because Shou took to calling him "aniki" (big brother), as well as the fact that he acted as a surrogate big brother when Ryou became distant from Shou in a tough-love attempt to make him grow up a little bit. He gave him the confidence to stand on his own two feet, and he trusted him enough that at the end of season three, he even entrusted Shou with the knowledge of what happened in the Dark World to tell his other friends the whole story once they returned to their own world.

Kenzan is a possible candidate for this, since he also calls him "aniki", but it seems Juudai wasn't as close with him as he was with Shou.

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?

Johan is probably the person he would consider his "best" friend. They met only recently in comparison to the other friends he has, and yet he felt a connection right away -- something just clicked, fell into place like it was supposed to be there and then was there all along, pieces that found their way together in the box by an odd quirk of luck. Johan was a transfer student, the champion of North School, who was part of a transfer program Duel Academia set up to establish relations with its sister schools.

6. Does he have other close friends?

Plenty. There's Johan, Shou and Kenzan, but also Asuka, Manjoume, Fubuki, Edo, Ryou, O'Brien, Jim, and Rei... probably others I'm forgetting. Oh, GX, you and your enormous main cast.

7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?

As mentioned in a previous section, he's pretty easy to make friends with, and attracts people to him with little effort.

8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?

Friends. Not that family wasn't important, but he didn't particularly get super attached to his. I suppose he could consider his friends as people who double as a family, but not... really. They're friends. This is one point where he and Johan differ, though.

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?

Not married... technically. Does fusion to one's soul count as marriage? I don't even know, man.

10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?

N-No? He feels completely committed to Yubel, and would probably be guilty up the wazoo if he were to ever "cheat" on her, truthfully.

11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?

Hard to say. He's definitely got some sort of romantic relationship going on with Yubel, something very much unspoken, because he doesn't tell anyone but the people he really trusts about it, since it's such a controversial sort of love, considering what Yubel is. It's possible he has (or, rather, had) a crush on Johan before Yubel stole his heart again, but he doesn't really acknowledge it.

12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?

I don't think even he's thought about this. Probably since he's not actively looking for anyone right now, it would just be the sort of click that would tell him "hey, this may just turn into something more". Unless you're Yubel... but that's a whole different story.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?

I think he'd probably rather remain childless if possible, much as he likes and can get along with kids. Because of who he is and what he does with the traveling, they would probably be much harder for him to deal with than someone who was settled in one spot. Plus, odds are Yubel is sterile. And that would be a messy business to get involved with.

14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?

He considers every duelist he knows as a rival, though Manjoume seems to especially be a contender for the title of "Juudai's rival". As for enemies... thus far, nothing human has established itself as a rival for him, but evil forces in the universe like the Light of Destruction and Darkness seem to be the only ones he'd consider an "enemy" or irredeemable.

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?

Right smack in the middle -- very much pansexual. All genders, and probably reaching into the realm of the inhuman as well (as in spirits). Why? Because of Yubel -- she is both, technically. Even so, he doesn't seem picky about the type of romantic partner he goes for, if anyone. If he can go for a hermaphrodite, there's little saying he can't go for one or the other if he found reason to. That, and he's been seen to blush in an instance where a female spirit (Gravekeeper's Assailant) pressed him against her chest, though it wasn't a sexual gesture to begin with.

16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?

...Oh. Here's an interesting topic. A lot of people would probably assume he doesn't know the first thing about sex, but that's not entirely true. He knows the very basics, but is by no means experienced. It's not something he cares much about in a relationship, either -- something completely platonic would satisfy him just as much. He'd probably feel rather uncomfortable with trying, actually, if it wasn't someone he completely and utterly trusted and cared about in a romantic regard.

He may or may not actually be doing sexual things with Yubel, though. I'm not telling yet. :D

17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?

Oh boy. Uh. Turn-offs would probably be someone who's obnoxious about sex, or someone who asks for it multiple times or tries to get him in bed with them, even if he was in a relationship with them. If it doesn't feel right to him, and if he's already declined, then pressing the issue is a pretty damn quick way to get him to break off with you. Turn-ons? I have no idea, but he has very odd tastes, to say the least. Nothing outright disgusting, but just... odd.

Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit type?

He doesn't have a set canon birthday, so I set his birthday as August 10th, which would make him a Leo. And judging by the time frame canon gives us, he was born in the year 1989. I filled out a form for him and got this for the year of the snake, which is... not at all him. The year of the horse is far more accurate, but being born in 1990 wouldn't correspond with the timeline, and would make him a year too young to be in Duel Academia when he was.

As a Leo, it's only slightly more accurate than the Chinese zodiac analysis. It's right when it says he's arrogant yet noble and warmhearted, and that he is kind of a grown-up child, but the rest is not quite all on the mark.

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?

Spiritual in a not-so-classical sense. I can't see him being too religious, but he's certainly spiritual because he knows spirits exist and can communicate with them easily, if nothing else. He's not a particularly deep person in this respect, but it wouldn't be a mistake to label him spiritual in general.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?

Not really, other than just going by what he feels is right at the time. Once again, the quirk of not stopping to think about things makes an appearance. The results, consequently, are not always satisfactory.

4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?

Religious fanatics probably would get on his nerves, because he's not particularly religious himself. Yet, people who don't believe in spirits irritate him, and in this way he's just a little intolerant. He'd try to change their mind, and if he couldn't, it would frustrate him greatly that they can't see something he knows to be true, at least in his own world. But even in his own world there are unbelievers, and while he won't lay a shitload of pressure on them for them to change their minds, he'd be extremely disappointed if they dismiss something he knows to be true as being untrue.

5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?

Can't think of any; again, he's pretty open-minded and prefers giving everyone a chance before turning them away.

Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?

He basically lives off of what he gets, which is very little considering he's nomadic and probably purposely doesn't hold a job for very long. I doubt he puts himself in too much debt, but he finds ways to make ends meet.

2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?

He was likely born in upper-middle class, since his parents had the money to live comfortably and get him a high-tech memory-erasing treatment for his nightmares when he was a child. As he is now, he's just a wanderer of his own volition.

3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?

...Nowhere! He probably camps out outside or, if he has the money to kill, in a hotel here and there as he travels. His home as a child was never really shown in-depth, but I assume it was a house of reasonable quality in Japan (not in Domino), because of the aforementioned ability of his parents to pay for things.

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?

Card games! Other than that, I don't think there's an awful lot he spends on. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if he spend all his spare change on Duel Monsters packs. In-game, mostly on supplies for Pokemon and stuff like that.

5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?

Travels, and probably does odd jobs. Chances are there's a handful he doesn't like, but he'll do them for a while without complaint as long as he gets paid.

6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?

Dueling is a given, as is traveling, but also... he fishes quite often, which a lot of his friends can't possibly understand what he sees in that kind of hobby. But he likes it and finds it relaxing.

7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?

Skip meals? This kid? What, are you kidding me? He eats five meals a day and then some, probably. He eats practically anything put in front of him, but particularly likes fried shrimp and other seafood and sushi. At the same time, though, he manages to stay pretty healthy and fit. I doubt he drinks alcohol at this point, though. And yeah, he probably eats out a lot, since him being a good cook outside of heating things up is not something I can see easily.

Associations
Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is his favorite:

1. Color? RED. Black is a close second.
2. Smell? Fried seafood.
3. Time of day? Night, only somewhat surprisingly -- darkness incarnate and all.
4. Season? Summer.
5. Book? Probably nothing, since I doubt he reads for pleasure
6. Music? I'm not sure he listens to music much, but he probably likes most rock that isn't too hard/metal/screamo.
7. Place? Everywhere? The world is his backyard, after all.
8. Substance? ...Cards? I don't know, argh.
9. Plant? Roses, if only because of Yubel.
10. Animal? Cats. And dragons. Teeheehee.
