(no subject)

OK I'm going to be positive for a change. At 3 AM in the morning... oh well, I couldn't put my mind to bed :1 I'm doing better than I was earlier this week, thanks for the support <3

I really like where my art is heading. I've always had a huge respect for people who could draw cartoons and construct them well and oh my god so many years before I even knew how construction was referred to I would angst about not having it in my artwork. It seemed so effortless when I looked at solid art and i was like HOW DO THEY DO THIS maybe it's just how their brain works and I'LL NEVER GET THE HANG OF IT

Like I would read all kinds of John K posts (some of the basic principles are really helpful if you feel like wading through everything and the raeg) and Joe Weatherly's book and still would not be able to apply it as much as I'd have liked to my own art. None of the angles were consistent and everything was a mush

(also it's really embarrassing just how recently I thought this design was Pretty Okay. nope.avi)

Earlier this year I posted to smartsnark and someone was like "no dude you should probably construct with like

actual

3D shapes DRAW THAT SHIT OUT BRO"

only you know, more eloquently

and I was like ohhhhhh fineeeee NOTHING ELSE IS WORKING LET'S GIVE IT A SHOT >:C And it was like, really awkward at first:

but man it's gotten easier and just, other things like inking and detail are falling into place more easily because of it and things are looking a lot more solid but also a lot more free/expressive! Like proper construction felt really super constricting but as I get used to it things are looking better

And I really love the Wolf Heads I've drawn in the last 48 hours:

There are mistakes! I'm probably not even aware of all of them skhgaslkfd but Virtual's ear is placed a bit too low or is melting or something, and the orange one has something bothering me in the neck area (not enough rolls maybe ghskdf idk) because I was lazy and kind of scribbled in the lower body like I often do in bust shots, 8(

but compared to most of what I did just a few months ago they're way more solid and have more appeal IMO

and I'm sure not everything is going to be as good, I still mix up angles sometimes and especially muzzles fall out of alignment a lot and canines are def. my strongest subject (felines are awkward still, I should take a week to practice them or something... and everything else is bland, humans are never as appealing as I'd like, but being better at my favourite subject is p. cool nevertheless) and they still have a bit of sameface... but man, the fact that I'm starting to get a hang of what used to be the most baffling thing, which is also is a very important part of cartoon drawing for me, is really encouraging and I feel like... I'll get there with the rest 8)

much has passed since january
