Fun

Interestingly, after joyliveshere advised me to find something more fun to do than read a book, the Fabulous Friday Four on 'fortysomething' was on that very topic, i.e. what do I do for fun, what's the most fun I ever had, who is the most fun person I know, etc.

What exactly is meant by 'fun'?  Does it mean anything enjoyable or relaxing or designed to lift the mood, or is it something demonstrably involving high jinks or high spirits?  When some people talk about "having a good time," they mean partying, socialising, getting drunk, being convivial, waving their hands in the air and wearing a comical pair of socks, i.e. demonstrating to the casual observer that they are absolutely a fun person having lots of fun.   Inwardly, of course, they could be as miserable as sin.

Now, if I said I have fun alphabetising my DVDs, plaiting dolls' hair or staring at piles of bricks, the aforementioned party animals would most likely think I was fairly dull and cheerless.  They might say things like "cheer up, it'll never happen!" or "penny for your thoughts?" when their assessment would have been based on the fact that I wasn't outwardly "having fun".  Inwardly, of course, I could be having the time of my life.

Anyway, I spoke Beverley last night and we arranged to go to the Tate Modern next weekend to see the Cy Twombly exhibition.  It'll be such fun!
