My Top 100 Favorite Songs part 6: #75-71

May 09, 2013 22:55

Alright! Part 6! Whew...75 to go...

Oh yeah, and like what TK is doing with his top 100, I'm going to put some lyrics as the spoiler and maybe see if you can identify the song.

[See money speaks volumes louder than words, Or virtues with wings, maybe not quite at first]#75 - Selling the News - Switchfoot - Vice Verses (2011)

Switchfoot make their first appearance in my top 100 with an awesome song from their newest rockin' album, Vice Verses. I've said it many times before, but I believe Jon Foreman is one of the greatest songwriters of his generation. This song is no different with several possible interpretations. To me, it's about how the media is corrupted by money and they are willing to lie to the public for a buck. It really is quite sick, but also so true, and that's not just my opinion. It makes it harder in general to find out what is fact or not and then it leads to an uneducated society that can't even realize they are being lied to anymore. I just feel like this song is so timely for the day and I agree with everything in it. Oh yeah, and the music is awesome too lol.

[There are many things that I Would like to say to you but I don't know how]#74 - Wonderwall - Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995)

Wow, Wonderwall is old lol. This one was one of my first songs by Oasis that I'd ever heard and of course it was on The Point. I always loved it, but it wasn't until I moved up to Oregon that I picked up the album from the library and it quickly became one of my favorite albums at the time. I think it's another love song, but there is nothing wrong with that. Love songs are generally very beautiful and very pleasing to the ear. Plus, it has easy chords so I can play along on my guitar lol. If only I could sing...

[Me, I cried out ]#73 - To Kingdom Come - Passion Pit - Manners (2009)

I first became aware of Passion Pit while using last.fm's recommended playlist and came across 2 songs that I ended up buying. Neither of them were as good as To Kingdom Come. I only heard this song after buying their first studio album, Manners. The first thing anyone probably notices about Passion Pit, is lead singer Michael Angelakos' falsetto singing style. It sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, but it really works well with this awesome song. It starts off with just the lead guitarist followed closely by the drums and then the keyboard. That lick on the keyboard grabbed me instantly and never let go. Because of that and the passion Michael exudes in his singing, it deserves a spot in my top 75. Plus, it has a fun music video! Enjoy!

[Since then it's been a book you read in reverse So you understand less as the pages turn]#72 - Pink Bullets - The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow (2003)

Wow, a 3rd straight song with an official music video. However, this music video is extra special for me. My dad and I were flipping through the On Demand songs, and he randomly chose this one, and we were both drawn in. It was a unique little music video with stop motion animation with paper cows, and the song was very sweet as well. It was a song dad actually liked! OMG. Not too long afterward, dad picked up Wincing the Night Away (2007), and I was officially hooked on The Shins and everything James Mercer has done. I love his melodies, his songwriting, and basically just the depth and complexity of it all. I later picked up Chutes Too Narrow from the library mostly for Pink Bullets, but fell in love with their other songs as well. This is also another song I should be able to play on the guitar and that also helps.

[Hey don't you want to go down Like some junkie cosmonaut A million miles below their feet ]#71 - Low - Cracker - Kerosene Hat (1993)

For the longest time, I had this song in my head, but I couldn't for the life of me find out the name of the song or the artist until last year. It was one of the bumper songs on A&G and they actually posted what their bumper songs were then and I quickly scooped it up. The intro is just so epic and full of win before lead singer David Lowery's voice kicks in and the song begins to build again. It's a druggie song, but the lyrics are so interesting anyway lol. I think that might just be a part of drugs. Anyway, it's a really cool song with great guitar work with an awesome solo in it. And how cool is an album called Kerosene Hat? You know? Weird stuff.
