My band just went in to the studio and recorded our demo... after about 6 hrs of setup yesterday and another three today, we laid down 5 tracks in about 6 hours. We didn't even attempt the vocal tracks today, we'll get to those next weekend, then mix it, then burn up a couple dozen copies and get them to all the people we've promised them to. Recording is hard work, I'm fucking exhausted. I pretty much hated every second of it, mostly just nerves + no sleep + back pain (from hunching over pedals all day). It seemed like there was something drastically wrong with each and every take. We're not overdubbing (that "live" sound, natch), so no "studio magic" to fix your fuckups, just yell "Goddammit! Fuck fuck FUCK!" at the top of your lungs and take it from the top (and be blessed with ubershitty looks from your bandmates). But when we listened to the raw tracking mix at the end of the day, I was amazed at how good it sounded. Not that it was the most amazing piece of music ever iMac'd or anything, or that it was even close to our best performance, but it sounded sooo much better than I had anticipated (having heard it come in piecemeal, one mangled take after another). Downright serviceable, I must say, especially since we were all dead on our feet from lack of sleep, and we hadn't rehearsed since a week before Abi's due date (she was 4 days late, so I guess we could have rehearsed that last Tues if Jessie hadn't been in false labor). I can't wait to hear the actual final mix. We didn't even have the energy to go out afterward and get drunk to celebrate, we all just went home. After packing out all our gear, that is. Let me just say, we either need a smaller bass amp or a bigger roadie. We're going to throw that crappy little video that's up on the site on the disc too, so we'll have an "enhanced demo", ha ha ha. We'll probably throw everything up on the site, even though we're only gonna put 2-4 tracks on the disc. We got a copy of the raw unmixed mix, but there was only the one copy and someone else took it home. I'd have burned copies for everybody, but she wanted it first, so oh well. You have to come to my house to load it in your iPod anyway, you no-computer-having bastard. I'd kinda like to be able to show my gf why I abandoned her and the baby for a weekend, though.
Jessie is well, Abi is well. I think we got a good one. Baby, that is. She's already too big for the "size newborn" bootie things she has. I'm debating whether to get her "hip parent" schwag like Ramones onesies or to just let her be all pink/pastel seven days a week. Not really much point until she's old enough to leave the house without being wrapped in fifteen yards of fuzzy blanket, I suppose. I do need to upgrade her stuffed animals, though. Nary a shark or dinosaur or giant man-eating fruitbat to be seen. I keep meaning to pick up one of the plush cthulhus, but I don't normally go in to comic/collectibles places so it keeps slipping my mind.
Oh yes... I forgot to tell lj about it, but I had a kid.
