In line with my decision to shift my writing focus, I managed to do only original writing the first seven days of May with only one exception (that being my Numb3rs drabble
Clue). I only wrote on 4 of those 7 days, but I managed a total of 4,618 words which, while not terrific, is more than I managed in all of January, so I'm quite pleased with myself.
I've got too many different original projects started to list them all here (some that I haven't worked on in a while), but below is some info on the ones that I've worked on this week.
Untitled: This is a sci-fi piece I'm working on that I'm hoping to get done in time to submit for consideration for the
Girls with Guns anthology. This is an online short story anthology so it would allow people who've read my fics to read it for free if I get in.
Dragonsong or Dragon Spell: This is a fantasy piece that I started after seeing How to Train Your Dragon as I really, really wanted to write about dragons then. It's the short story I've worked the most on and is coming along quickly.
At the Crossroads: This is a dark fantasy/horror piece (my first in this genre, I think) that came to me out of nowhere. I literally just got the idea on Monday, sat down and wrote almost the entire piece in one go. The only bit I left out was some dialog towards the start that wasn't coming to me right away and I really wanted to get to the image that had appeared in my mind.
Although this story came out of nowhere, I do know what inspired it. I've been looking into crossroads mythology recently as watching Supernatural made me think about some stuff that was mentioned in my Greek Mythology course at UMass about demons at thresholds. I've been digging into it (it's really fascinating!) and all of that must have combined in my mind to form the image that launched this story. It wasn't my intent, as I quite often look up mythology stuff just out of curiosity, but I'm quite pleased with it nonetheless.
All titles mentioned above are subject to change, as they're a bit spur of the moment now, though I do often go with the first one that comes to mind as it tends to stick.
Strangely enough, the protagonists of all three of these stories are female. I'm really not too bothered by what gender my main character is and generally go with whatever gender the idea comes to me as. The first story above is one of the few exceptions to that rule as I swapped the genders of the two main characters to make it fit the theme of the anthology.
As for the last 2 days, well I didn't do any writing yesterday and I've only managed to type up what I'd handwritten of the above stories today. There's still some time left before I should go to bed and the next few scenes of Dragonsong are calling out to me, so who knows?
