February: Reads & Word Count

Mar 03, 2010 23:19

Drat, I'm just on the cusp of finishing 2 more books and had hoped to do so before the end of the month, but they'll have to fall towards March's reads I guess.

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke (1006 pages): 3 & 1/2 Stars, Good
A good book, but too slow in parts and easy to put down. I first started reading this book somewhere last summer when I'd finished reading all of the other books my sister had bought and left at my place while she moved to England. As I said above, it's quite easy to put down at the right parts and that's exactly what happened, it got put down for long stretches of time even if I enjoyed it whenever I did start reading it again. Due to it's size, though, I wasn't able to take it with me on the bus to and from work, another reason why it took me so very long to finish reading it.
Part of the reason why it is easy to put down is that there are so many different characters that the author introduces at different times so you have these sudden jumps from one pov to another and at the end of such a section things aren't left hanging in huge suspense. Everything does tie together quite nicely in the end, though, and the creativity of large parts are great.

Flash Forward by Robert J. Sawyer (319 pages): 4 Stars, Great
I first got this book because I'd lost track of the TV show during NaNoWriMo and had enjoyed it. Therefore I was quite curious as to what had caused the Flash Forward event, so when I saw this book in Borders, I couldn't resist it. The book is definitely far better from what I saw of the show and differs in several critical factors even early on before the TV show diverges quite radically from it. For one thing, the book is set in Switzerland and follows a group of international scientists (Canadian, Greek & Japanese) instead of American FBI agents. And for another, the Flash Forwards in the book are of some two decades in the future, not the mere six months from the show.
A wonderful idea that was really well executed, a great sci-fi read for people who like the genre written by a guy who really knows his science.

On the writing front, things didn't go all that much better in February than in January. Yes, I wrote about double what I did in the first month, but it's still not nearly good enough.
The goal for the month was to reach 56,581 words. My word count on the 28th was a mere 9,323 words.

It's last year all over again, except this year I've tacked on an extra 50k to my goal! And with my March Madness of choice being EdMo, I'm not sure how much I'll be able to write around the editing.

I always do this to myself.

books, wriye
