My country, Azerbaijan, is very far from the Icelandic volcano. However, we also suffered the consequences of that volcano. We could not fly for days. Our many links were broken; many plans were frustrated as well, as the world is interrelated by thousands of ties.
But we also have our personal volcano. Azerbaijan has been suffering for nearly 20 years from the volcano blown out by Armenia - namely, from the volcanic lavas and dust generated not by nature but by humankind. Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan lasting for about 20 years is in fact a disaster similar to the Icelandic volcano.
Everybody became aware of the Icelandic volcano owing to their personal sufferings, but, regardless of our long-term activity in highlighting to the world community the war and the volcano of occupation blown out by Armenia, our voice is still not heard. We encounter indifference but perhaps the harmful dust of the Icelandic volcano will do one good thing, thus helping the world community to appreciate the conditions of those in Europe who suffer as we do from the volcanoes generated by conflicts, wars and occupations and then take resolute measures in this respect. However, we hope that states and respected organisations learn such lessons without the dust clouds of volcanoes and other calamities that have global implications.
