True (Manhattan) Story

Last Friday, Kendell and I had plans to meet friends for dinner after work. Owing to some bad communication on all sides, I ended up getting the address of the restaurant wrong, which I realized when I arrived there and the hostess said she couldn't find our reservation.

I called our friends and got the right address. But now I had the problem of communicating the correction to Kendell who was still on her way. I dialed her on my cell without any hope of getting her, thinking she'd probably be underground in the subway. And sure enough, her phone rang without answer.

As the phone rang, I saw a cab pulling right up to where I stood. The "available" light lit up as the person inside paid their bill. I felt a little bad about taking my own cab to the right location instead of waiting for Kendell, but figured it was better to take a cab when I saw one.

This all happened in a few seconds -- my call to Kendell was still ringing as I walked toward the cab, and the cabbie felt compelled to tell me through his open window to be patient as I approached the opening passenger door, and then suddenly I was looking right at Kendell.

Thirteen thousand licensed cabs in New York, and I happened to find Kendell in the one I needed! Should've played the lottery that day. The only way this could have been any more like a movie would have been if I somehow managed to get into the cab through one side while Kendell got out the other, without our noticing each other...
