Since I just read "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" I think the Nixon/Vampires would definitely sell. On the other hand vampires, zombies and werewolves have been done. Could you invent a new creature?

Barrow-wights are under-utilized. The scene in Tolkien was incredibly scary, I've always thought.

Or what about Skinwalkers? Those can be pretty creepy.

Anthropophagi - what a coincidence! Just finished a wonderful new YA novel called The Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey. How have we missed this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthropophage I had no idea! http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&source=hp&q=anthropophagi&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi Herodotus, Shakespeare, even Sir Walter Raleigh wrote about them! The book is really good, very atmospheric, takes place in 1888 New England, highly recommended.
