Pern and Prejudice

Elessa Bennett glanced in the direction of a young man standing alone in the corner of the drawing room. "And who might that be?" she asked her companion.

"That is D'rcy, of Pemberley Weyr," Manora Lucas replied. "Bronze Mnementh's rider. Well-favored and wealthy, but of a most sullen disposition.

"Not at all like the effervescent B'ngley," she added, glancing at Elessa's sister, who was even now dancing joyfully with bronze Orth's rider.

"Indeed, I should say not," said a voice behind them. It was W'kham, green Klarth's rider. "I knew D'rcy as a weyrling, and regret to say that, while we were once close friends, our intimacy is not what it once was. I find his temperament much changed, and not for the better, regrettably. Were it not for his interference at my Impression, I might even now be a bronze rider."

Just then, a blur of gold squawked into being above W'kham's shoulder, causing the two young ladies to gasp. W'kham smiled as Elessa's sister Lydia scampered up, saying, "Oh goody, W'kham, you've brought along your fire lizard!"

-- Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand that's quite enough of that. (Kendell and I were inspired by a recent coincidence of her showing me the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice and my introducing her to the Dragonriders of Pern series.)
