Well, I went to my "exciting" high school reunion and passed up on going to the "Rush" concert. Big mistake! Should have followed my gut instinct on this one! First, I was a transplant to this high school being a military brat. The "kids" were pretty much in their own cliques and they grew up with each other unlike us military kids. I transferred in my junior year and wow! speaking about not being accepted in! The military kids hung up together as we were "outsiders". I was never a "popular" kid so didn't belong to the popular groups the school had. I did sports but was never in the cheerleading or "Girl of the Month" winner. Yup! They had "Girl of the Month" back in those days! I hear the school doesn't have it now (I thought it was so dumb back then!)
I always lived overseas on military bases and never had issues like this so it was a major eye opener! What kind of clothes you wore, car you drove, etc. The first school I ever finished in one place was my college, so I never really stayed in touch with my classmates as we were nomads, so to speak :) We kind of lost contact after a while. Kind of sad, to think about it.
So, I went last night, and it was like being back in high school again! The cliques! None of the guys I hung out with were there...I checked the list and their names weren't on it and I tried to look around and talked some but felt it was so shallow. I listened to some conversations and decided it wasn't for me. I am glad people there were connected as they grew up with each other...they just didn't let "outsiders"in, no matter how hard the "outsiders" tried to become friends with them.
I have excellents tools I have picked up growing up military in meeting people and socializing. I'm not shy and can go up to anyone and strike up a conversation (thanks, Dad! He taught me so much about socialization!) Just this school was difficult to infiltrate. Just wish my few other friends were there ( we also went to the university together, too). I left after an hour. I decided I enjoyed spending time with my dog more! He is unconditional and couldn't stop wagging his tail when he saw me! He didn't check me out up and down to see what name brand dress I was wearing or if I gained weight (I actually looked better than most and looked younger! HAH!) It's from reading all my Cas/Dean smex stories! Keeps me young! ;P
I will keep enjoying the friends I have in my life now and keep remembering when I meet someone new, to welcome them and hope to make them feel comfortable as possible. As they say, "You only get one chance to make a first impression!". That applies to my patient care as well. I want my patient's to be able to be comfortable around me so they can trust me :)
I hope other's high school or other reunions are more enjoyable! Hopefully my next one will be more enjoyable as time goes by!
